What Memory to Buy?

Post Reply
This question comes from Dad via Kelly (me), who has been bugging him for more RAM since her SWG friends have been saying she needs more. So *I* actually have little idea about this stuff, but Dad told me to ask because it'll help him make his decision.

Dad wants to know, is there a preformance difference noteable between PC2100 DDR and 333 MHz DDR? I've got the slower 2100 stuff, and he can either buy me another stick of that and give me a gig of that, OR he says if there's a noteable preformance plus to getting 333 MHz we could spend the extra money and go ahead and get a full gig of that.

So...can anybody help out with that? (And if any of this doesn't make sense or I get the terminology wrong, don't blame me. I'm just the messenger.)

I say, if you're on a budget, go with just adding to the ram you have. I didn't notice a big difference when I upgraded from the 2100 DDR ram to 333 about a year ago. The extra 512 meg of ram will give you the biggest boost....plus I found that the 333 ram chips got VERY hot if you don't have good air flow through your case (I burnt up 2 512 meg sticks right after I upgraded).

And that's all I have to say about that.

If you can spare the $140, go with a gig of DDR 400. I used to have PC800 RAMBUS (which at the time was the fastest you could buy. Now I'm stuck with a grand worth of useless RAM.) but had to wich to DDR 400 when I rebuilt my machine 3 weeks ago. It runs a tad warm, but its very sweet :)

If your looking for the budget way though, just pop in a gig of what you have now. This game relies on 2 major parts of your system...RAM and VIDEO CARD. CPU is a big thing to, but you can run the game well on a junk celeron if you have lots of RAM and an excellent card.

Well dad ended up buying an extra 512 of the 333, so I've got a gig but it's running at the 2100 speed. As people who were on Vent with me know, I was absolutely FREAKING OUT because holy crap, the game runs SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry I missed this thread earlier.

I was going to warn you not to buy the 333 stuff if your board doesn't support it. The one problem with upgrading RAM is that you can only get something as fast as your board supports, or else it's just "wasted" speed.

At least that's my understanding of it.

But glad you're enjoying the game more! I know when I upgraded to the 1.75G I had in there (now back down to 1.5G) it was a HUGE leap in performance.

Well, as I understand it the 333 ram that my dad bought is just running at the speed of the 2100 stuff, but it's still a gig of 2100 speed memory and the game is running absolutely amazing for me. What's sort of amusing to me is that I had to convince him that the ram would actually help...

Well, I told him how much better the game wrong, and he got all pissed off. His exact words, "Well the developers should be shot for making the game need that much memory."
