What Motivates You...

Post Reply
In the GM forum, we've been discussing what motivates players (RPer and non-RPer alike) to participate in player run events. Most of us are veterans of failed player events and are trying to get an idea of what we need to do to get more people involved. So, the questions I am asking everyone who wants to answer them are:

What makes you decide if you will participate in a player event or not?

What do you expect to come away from the event with (Loot, money, a sense of accomplishment, etc)?

What kind of events/story arcs interest you the most as a Roleplayer (mystery, conflict, social, etc)?

Ok...have at it!!

I'm still in the process of setting up shop now that I'm back. I'd like to pull up my house to throw up a medium house "the Union Hall" so i can have that be my base of operations.

Being a longtime RP'er (outside of SWG) I'm always interested in participating. The accident where the devs didn't make the stormtroopers attackable when they captured Zannon (a long time ago) was kind of a downer but i look forward to others.

Nothing really would make me decide whether to participate or not. If I have time to log on, I'm game. It will definitely help character development.

I think just the sense of accomplishment would be the most important expectation, but i can't say i'd turn away loot or money if it was offered. I'm not gonna lie, i like money and shiny stuff... and nougat.

I'm interested in all of the events since I haven't really participated. Social ones seem to be relatively frequent. That's why i'm glad people are posting about the events happening and I'm looking forward to taking advantage of the opportunities.

I think the three things I've had the most fun RPing in game are:

1). Hacking in real life the encoded messages regarding Zannon's capture. That was a lot of fun to work on, as it really forced a level of immersion in the game that the "choose your own adventure" style chat puzzles AI NPCs give typically don't.

2). Tracking down and finding the prison where Zannon was being held (originally) on Talus. It would have been even better if Zannon had been there, but you can't have everything.

3). Having that Lost coordinator ask me to run some medical equipment to Rori where they were battling the Jedi. Considering I was bored and about to log off at the time, I realized that if you ask me to play a Smuggler, I will be ECSTATIC in my compliance. Granted, I will gut you with my exorbitant prices, but hey, supply and demand, eh?

Also, I love seeing the custom stuff that Zan gets the Devs to drop for his events, or the things he used to find that are already in the game and then use Trayuse to come up with an RP reason for us to raid it. It always adds a huge immersion factor to them.

In fact, I had no interest whatsoever in doing the Corvette mission until Dooo phrased it as "Those dirty Blood Razors stole from us and we're going to go pay them back on their Corvette." Then I was pretty pumped to go, but couldn't because it was a schoolnight.

This is simply based on whether or not I'm around and if the person wants my input/participation. I'm always up for participating in an event because I know that it will lead to more happening, and we'll all be better for it. I know it sounds altruistic, but that's the deciding factor for me.

A fun RP experience and maybe a little name recognition. I'm as full on loot as I can be and credits are very easy to come by. I would rather engage in some stellar roleplay, and someone say "That Colonel guy was pretty cool."

I enjoy a social story where things are loose and free flowing. I really hate having strict perameters around my RP sessions because it limits what I can and can't do (within reason) as well as what can and can't happen. That's why I really enjoy the Roba. I also enjoy engaging in combat because the Colonel is a military man, so the Mos Eisley events (as well as the old Rori Rebel Outpost raids) were right up my alley.

Other than that, I haven't participated in any other major events/stories, so I'm not sure what else I would like/dislike. I am helping to set up an event for Ceka, and I can say I do enjoy a good storyline (as you'll see with IB).

Deciding factor for me is often random. Generally, it consist of do I have the time for it (Some events start too early for me or too late), are my services not required elsewhere (gotta raid the rebels sometime), and is col. Raggs going to be there?

When I go to an event, I don't expect to come out of it with anything. Just the fact I got to play it is enough. But name recognition doens't hurt......

The stories and events all interst me, but generally I try to limit myself to those where an Imperial officer might be seen. This tends to lead me more on the rebel vs imperial stories, but sometimes I can break away from those for something a bit differnt. (Like the one where I was overseeing an archelogical dig)

I feel if i'm on and i've heard a lot about it, or if being a citizen of Noc demands it, I will more often than not go check out player events. I think people are going to go or they're not, what makes it successful is getting people to stay. No offense, but the event that Dooo hosted a while ago, good story, just moved to slow. I wasn't there at the end, but I heard it was good.

Basically, if you want an event to be successful you got to have a good amount of action mixed in with a good story. I'm not saying this is easy, but that's what keeps me in a player event.

I like cheese. A healthy dose, but still in moderation. Creative puzzles both inside and outside the game, inside jokes (RL ribbing, Indy references, insult dueling, Max, ect.), brushes with fame (Han, Vader, Boba, Ackbar, ect.), spectacles (especially ones on a large and lavish scale).

I prefer events that aren't dependant on a single character. They not only come off a bit egosentric, but they just don't get everyone elses characters invested in the events.

I love many storylines running at the same time. It's more dramatic and "Star Warsy". Intertwining stories make the egosentric ones much more palatable.

Any rewards are good, but I can easily live without. It's the experience I want, not the loot.

I'll participate if people I know are going as well. RL constraints factor in, o'course.

Not to disagree with everyone, but my opinion on stuff outside the game is that I hate it. I got an Athlon 2600+ with 768mb RAM and it just takes forever to flip flop back and forth.

I mean I don't let it effect what events I play or not, but I know I can't the only one who rolls their eyes when they get a URL during an RP. So basically I would try to avoid it.
