I don't know how many out there are of the generation to remember but one the all time greats in show biz has made his final bow.
"Mr. Late Night" Johnny Carson died today at the age of 79 of emphysema. After over 40 years in one of the toughest businesses in the world Johnny retired from NBC's The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, sitting in the chair for 30 of those years.
Everyone maybe has those shows that your parents said it was ok to stay up and watch. For me and my brothers it was Johnny. He wasn't the funniest, or the wildest, but he was one of the best show biz interviewers ever. One of my favorite phrases, "weird, wild stuff" came from Carson.
Jerry Seinfeld said that if you wanted to make it in Hollywood then Johnny Carson was usually the guy "stamping your hand". There's really not a show like that anymore. It's good that there are more outlets to up-and-comers, but Carson was like magic.
RIP Johnny Carson
I am old enough to have watched Johnny quite a bit. I was surprised he passed so suddenly. It was only a week ago I was readin that he was a secret joke writer for Letterman and was keeping up on the comical side of recent politics. Now he's gone.
I miss good, old school TV when funny didn't mean dirty.

It left more to the imagination. More creativity. More class.

I haven't watched late night TV since he retired. He was a classy man and I was very stunned to here about his passing. He was cut from the same character as Bob Hope, one of the great entertainers. Good bye Johnny, you'll be missed.

You will be missed by many and remembered by all for all those who came after you are nothing more than pretenders trying to reach the perfection you odtained.

RIP Jhonny,
I remember watching his show when I was a little kid.
Funny guy, I loved the episode where he was talking to a lady who had chips that looked like people then he had one on his desk that was his and he crushed it to mae it look like he crushed one of hers. He was awasome.

Hell yes. I remember wanting to stay up to see it when I was younger, and then when I could stay up to see it, I was more interested in "Letterman" or SNL or other "hipper, edgier" shows.Keer wrote:/agreeJabe Adaks wrote: I miss good, old school TV when funny didn't mean dirty.

In retrospect, I wish I had just stayed with Carson. The problem was he had the stigma of being something my Grandparents enjoyed, so therefore I must not like him.
In the end, Carson was funnier than any other host, or than any other late night show.
I just watched Jay's tribute to him, and finally got to see the old black and white "axe to the crotch" bit. The longest live sustained laugh from an audience. The guy who threw the axe (for those of you who don't know the bit, it was thrown at a human target drawn on a board, and the axe stuck in the target at the crotch and it looked like the target had a huge hard-on). So he goes to go grab it, and Johnny just grabs his arm, and shakes his head while bowed a bit, closed eyes, as if to say "no, no, that would just make things WORSE."
The audience laughed even HARDER. He didn't even have to talk and he could slay an audience.
I tip my hat to the best.

Carson made tacit weiner jokes?!?! He is my new hero.
Side note...I saw Ed McMahon (Sp?) on Larry King the other night; he was telling a story about Johnny.
ED MCMAHON IS THE WORST STORYTELLER EVER KNOWN BY MAN. Even Larry King was bored as shit.

I also always liked it when he had people from the San Diago Zoo come and bring animals. Some of the way he poked fun at the animals was just hysterical.
Yeah that was one of the shows I watched along with my dad and brother, as well as shows like M.A.S.H and old school Battlestar Galactica. Speaking of old school, anyone ever watch Buck Rogers? That show had that little robot called Twinkie..lol

He was awasome. But I thought he just waited until the lady was distracted and got out a the chip from his desk and ate loudly, making the lady look over at him in shocked. I was very young then but I was old enough to understand the wicked humor behind that.
