Why RP cantina events? Because they are easy to put together. These exist to bring people together, to help people advance elements of their ongoing stories, and to basically give us something to do between major events (which, as anyone who has ever done one of these will tell you, take a lot of time and energy to put together).

FYI.. we had a non-cantina event a couple Saturdays ago. The Temple of the Goddess dedication ceremony in Nocturnus. 6 people showed up to watch. After a turnout like that it is kinda hard to find the motivation to put together another event. We put a good deal of energy and creativity into that. /rant off

I go to the weekly social events specifically to interact with people outside my clique. I make it a point to RP with as many folks as I can.

If you want a non-cantina RP event, then I suggest you organize a non-cantina RP event.

If you ever ask the question.. "Why don't we ever do <insert activity here>?" The answer is, "Because I never made it happen."

That targets a specific group I don't belong to actually so why would I have gone?

Sure lesbian Twi'leks are gonna come then theres the random odball but other than that i would'nt expect a large turnout for a very miniscule target group.

The Temple Dedication Ceremony targeted the same audience the weekly and bi-weekly events targets: everyone who role-plays. I would argue that any event that is advertised on the website and in-game to large groups has an intended target audience of "all audiences." Small turnout outside of the Temple membership, I would argue, was due more to the time it took place during the day than people being oddballs or lesbians.
