Jabe, you really didn't care for FF VIII or X? I agree with you that VII was the best, but I think that those other two were pretty excellent in their own right.

I liked 8, it just wasn't as good and I liked 9 a bit too. I just kept liking them less with each iteration.

I'm with Jabe and Iago on this one. While 8-10 have their merit, they are by no means bad games, I haven't enjoyed a single one as much as I've enjoyed 7. I mean I did EVERYTHING in FF7, including the tireless effort to breed a Gold Chocobo and taking it to that remote island to recieve the coveted Knights of the Round summon. My god that was amazing. That game was just a load of fun.

Yes it was...it was even better with the X-summon materia that made you cast it twice in a row.

While VII is indeed a classic, I think I like VIII just a tiny bit more. I'm more into the "realism" of the newer FF characters, which is why I love the Advent Children thing more than, uh, pie.
VIII just had some great chemistry, and I like the music a bit better as well.
Oh, and VIII's summons rock nads. Whoever's decision it was to remove summons from X-2 (I don't care WHAT kind of game it was supposed to be) should have resulted in an immediate sacking.
However, I have to say that the "homoerotic" direction that the lead males have been taking (X, XII) is a bit disturbing. Also, the stupid "goofy" look in IX was a travesty, but I think it looks okay in Crystal Chronicles.

What was people's biggest gripe with FF8? It wasn't all that much different from 7. There were some gameplay differences, but I thought it was still very similar. I will agree, 9 was balls and I haven't played 11, but have only heard bad things.

I think I liked the Materia system better for battle. I found 8's battle system rubbed me wrong.
I also did not enjoy 8 because I found myself leveling hours and hours because the baddies were way to rough to deal with. Normally I like this but I thought it was excessive. I also got hopelessly stuck in a dungeon that I can not leave and I was not leveled high enough to defeat the boss. Thats when I closed the book on that game.

I beat VII, and I loved every mintute of it, VIII and IX were not really all that great tho I almost best IX. I did not enjoy X or X-2, and I HATED XI With a burning passion, the forced grouping after lvl10 makes you wanna puke there is nothing you can do alone, NOT EVEN THE STUPID CHOCOBO RIDING TEST!!!. But yes I love VII and I hope Advent children comes out befor the summer.

When FF became a CCG, I hiccuped and ran like hell. I don't need to draw 2, when I wanna kill something...next they'll combine FF with UNO. Magic and SW's CCG were enough for me. (considers removing that sentence to avoid invoking a Magic discussion) Cards aside, spells should never be items...that was wrong (VIII). XI was pretty...and that's that...nothing else to it.
Cloud's buster-sword was acceptable...I kinda liked it. Squall's lame gun/sword thing? What's the sword in X? A water one? I hope they can try a new weapon, next time. We had a choice before VII...I kinda liked that.

I never played the first one, Chrono Trigger, but I have to say...Chrono Cross was pretty damn cool. The sheer magnitude of plaable characters was awesome (close to 30 I think?). Granted, some of the moves looked like they were repeats, but you couldn't get all of the characters in the game just by playing it through once. All of the different characters backstories were sometimes conflicting with each other, so at a couple points you could only get one or the other depending on what route you went. Definitely a cool PS 1 game.

Chrono Trigger is definitely one of my top 5 RPGs...Cross hasn't gotten my attention yet. If you haven't played Trigger, find an emulator, it's worth it for RPG fans.

I tried to get into the Final Fantasy series right after FF7 came out. I told myself I would go back to where it all started, the original FF, and that way I wouldn't miss out on the storyline. Little did I know not all of the FF games went on a single basic story. I never made it past FF2.
On another RPG note, I saw screenshots for Fallout 3. Yes, I know the game has been scrapped, but to see that they were working on it made me very happy, then very sad. I remember when they said there would be no Fallout 3. It was like the era of 90s RPGs was over for me. I'll never forget that fateful day; December 31st, 1999.
