That is an extremely well thought-out post with a very good message but I can't say I'm behind you on all the issues.
For starters, large group events are not easily planned for other venues. Large groups of people have a reason to gather in a cantina because its... well... that is were large groups of people gather. You could plan an event around a group meeting at a Sandcrawler and but what would the reason be? Large group events are hard enough to pull off in the first place.
But thats not to say I don't think all RP should be in the cantina. For me RP starts in the cantina events most of the time and then gets carried out. For something as simple as meeting a shady character in a cantina and then going off to RP a small story at a weapons depot or NPC populated dungeon works well for me.
But I do agree that a lot of RP never makes it OUT of the cantina. Sometimes that all you do is chat it up all night with another player. Thats not necessarily a bad thing because you could be making new associates and establishing some groundwork for future RP events but sometimes you just can't step out of the door with your ideas.
As for canon I really just render the whole concept moot. I don't see a lot of discussions here about canon but when I do I look at it this way. As RPers we cannot limit our imaginations to just the films. I don't blame anyone for only holding the films as canon but I myself don't want to ignore wonderfully written stories and concepts when it comes to my RP. I want to get everything I can out of this universe. We all just drive ourselves on our imaginations and its hard for someone to say "just only count the films."
Just my 2 credits.

Well, as I'd always understood it, The Lars Farm wasn't the only stop on the Sandcrawler happytrain. Jawa make frequent stops outside of Mos Espa, Mos Eisley, and the like, and being that those places are market-cities (One slightly less legal than the other), I don't think the jawa would object to people bringing their own items to sell (all items in inventory, exchanged on hand - how Star Warsy is that?).Seret Sajet wrote:For starters, large group events are not easily planned for other venues. Imagine -never- making it out of the cantina. This is my pain. Well, okay.. One time Dossk made it out of the cantina an' got to RP on an' off for a whole week, but Zannon paid for 'er freedom. :PSeret Sajet wrote:But I do agree that a lot of RP never makes it OUT of the cantina. Inappropriate! Not canon! Strike that comment from the record! :lol:Seret Sajet wrote:As for canon I really just render the whole concept moot. I TOTALLY remember that! That was literally my first night in game. I had no idea how anything worked in game and I was still having a hard time figuring out how to walk (and not run) to get where I was going. That was fun!
GAME ON!

I could do the whole "post dissection" but frankly I've always found them condescending. Thats just me though.
I guess I'm not seeing where you going with this Sandcrawler Party idea you have brewing here. Are you planning to move the group out of the cantina and around a RP Perk? I'm not sure if you're planning an event around a crawler or suggesting one. I'd like to hear more and if massive Jawa slaughter is involved I'll be there giddy as a school girl on crack. Filthy scavengers deserve it.
There are a lot of events brewing under the service here, many of them have nothing to do with the cantinas. In the next 3 weeks you should see a few group opportunties that might just be your style.
I think what I'm ultimately saying is I'd like to see what you have up your sleeves (wait Tradoshans only have half-sleeves). Show us what you can do with these ideas and deliver your people from cantina captivity.

Oop. I'll keep my dissections to myself. No condescention meant, implied, or in any other way delivered..
I've got things up mah sleeves (they have short ones, those Trandoshans), but I'm not sure of the heirarchy.. Don't know who to talk to about setting something up. I've got a few things brewing, and I'd love to spring 'em on you all.
The Sandcrawler thing.. I'll have to elaborate and elaborate more, then write it all down and post it, as I'm verbal when it comes to planning things (Man, it helps to have a mini-recorder). But basically, think of it like a live bazarre, where there's people barking what they've got in their inventory, and well, selling it... With some very public twists and turns.
It's just a way to get people who may have some extra things laying around and want to get rid of them... Think of it like a SWG garage sale.
I'll keep my eyes open for the events.. You all never cease to pull through when anythings brought to your attention, so I'll be a watchin'.
Now who would I talk to about doing a little somethin' somethin'?

The more you talk about it, the cooler I think your SWG "garage sale" would be really cool to attend. However, at first glance my biggest qualm about attending would be the "spam-esque" atmosphere.
I don't know about anyone else, but personally, when I see an afk spammer in a starport touting their wares, I ignore it. Not with the /addignore function, but visually. I reserve the uber-ignore for those who rapid fire spam their messages or are sitting there spamming emotes.
How would you try to eliminate that kind of aspect about an open air bazaar? While at the same time trying to deal with the mass visual confusion that an open air market would entail? I am intrigued by this.

You're talking to him now. I'm more than happy to help anyone set up a large event using any resources the site can provide (including ourselves).Dossk wrote:Oop. I'll keep my dissections to myself. No condescention meant, implied, or in any other way delivered..

Just let me know what you need.
The idea sounds excellent and definately something I myself would like to endorse and be a part of. Its along the lines of something I am setting up in a couple week or so. For now I'm calling it "A Scumbag's Auction."
I cannot go into details because secrecy is a major part of the event but I do think it would be right up Dossk's alley.
Don't take my replies as a means of silencing your voice on issues you may have. I don't want this site to get a reputation for shutting down healthy discussions. Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I don't want you to be heard. Preach on Preacherman, this is a place to be heard.
I may have been too harsh on you with my replies. I just spent a good chunk of my time eliminating a griefing idiot from another one of my forums so my attitude is less than calm. I apologize for the attack.

Text be damned!
I never once thought you were being harsh, just voicing opinions. I just wanted to reassure you that I meant no harm in the quote/reply format I took. Back in the day (AOL White-Wolf RP), that's just how we replied to posts we wanted to comment on specifically (and it helped us keep our minds on what we were saying).
I'm down for whatever. That said.. On with suggestions!
Anyone?

Have you been to a rennisance faire? Think of how those vendors there act when you walk by...then apply a similar ruleset to the vendors at teh bizzare. Have them get people's attenetion using a sentence with the following: "Hay! Trando in the purple shirt...you need something a little more stylish?" or..."Hay...hornes! How bout you come over here and have a look at these premium weapons."Del'tar Chagas wrote:The more you talk about it, the cooler I think your SWG "garage sale" would be really cool to attend. Anyhow, you get the idea. With the new pavillion perks ect, you can make a really kickass bizzare in the middle of nowhere

What we be interesting is in all the chaos of vendors desperately trying to sell their various wares is if there was one item a vendor was selling that kicked off a side quest. Its a throw-back to Uncle Owen buying R2 and C3P0 thus kicking Luke off on his adventure. What if one of those vendors was selling a droid or a datapad that contained sensitive information that certain party was looking for. This in turn sets the players off on a romp to get the information to its destination while fighting off the opposition.
Sure it sounds like a total ripoff of New Hope's concept but you could change it just enough to make it more of a homage. (I live the fine line between rip-off and homage.
)
And guess what.... thats CANON BABY!

YYYYEEEESSSS!!!!
Now this is what I'm gettin' at. AWESOME scenario!!!
And just for the record.. I only type canon when I'm hearing The Simpsons' Comic Book Guy's voice in my head.. Though, I do hear it alot..
Has anyone messed with the shuttle beacon? 8 full hours of calling Lambdas in and out.. There could be a supply run or something.. Just off the top of my head.. Or the gazebos? Maybe a public protest cut short by 'Troops (How's that for injecting some "might of The Empire" into the game)?
Let's keep going.. We're heading in the right direction..
But I still think Grievous is goin' down like a chump.

Instead of the Empire being involved (or at least directly as the "villian" like always) you could involve more of a criminal aspect.
Lets say one of the Hutts uses a R2 droid to store all the shipping and storing locations for his spice, guns, whatever. This would make the droid a precious commodity. Now lets say some sleez steals the droid and sells it the jawas not knowing what it contains inside its databanks.
Now you have 2-4 sides wher ANYONE can be involved. Maybe the Imperials want the droid to take the warehouses of weapons for themselves. The Rebels might want the droid to use as a bargaining chip to ease the hunts people off their hidden bases. You can cound on the fact that our local guns-for-hire will get offered a nice big reward from the Slug to get his/her droid back. You can even involve a party which has no clue of the droids value and ends up wandering aimlessly around with hot merchandise at their side.
Thats just different enough NOT to be a rip-off. This way you can use multiple locations and just about any RPer out there in the event. It should give a broad enough range so people can say "yeah, I can see how my character would get involved in this."
A lot of time a major hurdle in RP events is for RPers to wonder if their character would actually be a part of them. In this scenario you can either be involved voluntarily or involutarily.
