Novall, why is it so insulting that people don't know the difference between a programmer and a tech? I guarantee there are a handful of people here who couldn't tell you the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist.

Well, the breakdown and easily annoying part seems to be on a personal level for most of us. We know that 'this' guy does a certain thing and that 'that' guy does the other in our repective fields. It's when someone outside of the field mixes up the fact that a psychologist studies the human mind while a psychiatrist works with diseases of the mind; So too can we get frustrated when the guy who does the formulations for a program gets credit from the guy that just came in to install a new hardware component.

Well the amount of schooling between the two is different firstly and secondly the major difference is one can prescribe medication while the other can not.

I believe if memory serves a Psychiatrist requires the extra schooling and can prescribe meds. I believe this is a 6-8 year program vs Psychologist which is a 4 year degree. I may have it backwards.

And based on the degree I could not necessarily tell the difference between the tech and the programer.

A psychiatrist is an MD (psychologist is a PhD) and is capable of prescribing medications, and the program length depends on where you go to get your doctorate. Interestingly enough, there are SOME (very few mind you) psychologists that are given the certifications to prescribe meds...some are military psychologists I believe.

I still don't know the difference between a tech and a programmer!

Graduated some time ago from Auburn University with a BFA. I'm an instructor in drawing at a fairly decent university in New England.

However, in between then and now, I worked in retail as a picture framer, in hospitals as a paper pusher, and in the Test and Evaluation sector of government services. The last in that sequence was the most fun! I enjoyed working with wacky, well educated engineers and brilliant technicians. (I did NOT enjoy working with surgeons, most of whom were just human body technicians and undereducated in all other areas...except investing.)

I sell my work, and enjoy teaching...usually.
