I'd go back in and pay, just the kind of guy I am. It's like when someone gives you more change back at the cashier, I've got to go back and give it to them.

Yeah, regardless of the situation, I am gone. Here is my rationale:
Nobody's kids are starving because I got 5 dollars of free product. A 5 dollar loss (it only happened once, right?) isn't a big deal in anyone's books.
And if your counter argument is that "what if it happens all the time?" then I say this. That attendant is either giving away gas for free or is a complete incompetent who should have been fired in the first place. Firing incompetent workers and replacing them with better performing ones is great for a company's production, and my driving away (that is to say, refusing to fix a mistake that would undoubtedly get an unsatisfactorily performing employee fired) is only helping me get better service from that station in the future. Win win.
There are at least 2 people where I work who need to be constantly reminded on how to not be fuck ups...I don't want to have to do that for other people too. I get enough of that shit at work.
