Although you're right about the effect Shin, I don't think the author was trying to mislead. Just poor wording on his/her part:

After a short period of time, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, and you will only see a green dot rotating if you're lucky! It's amazing how our brain works. There really is no green dot, and the pink ones really don't disappear.

He/she was just refering to ALL the dots disapparating and only seeing the green (which worked for me).

BTW - I thought the same thing you did at first and downloaded the GIF, dissassembled it and made sure it WAS, in fact removing one dot at a time.
