As for the money, you use ingame money. Unlike SWG (probably because they learned from SWG's problems), they have their own RL bank and a fluxuating rate of exchange between the lindens and dollars. They have thus cut out eBay.

As for earning lindens, you create things that others want. Hairstyles, houses, skins, dune buggies, Japanese maples, actual art, virtual art, cow launchers, tattoos, chairs, dances and dance macros, clubs to dance in, et cetera, et cetera.

About the only thing you can't create is your last name. That you have to choose from a list.

Oh, yes. You also have mature areas that the kids can't go into. There is a server for the teens...probably not as commercially oriented. Warning, do not travel into the mature areas while you are at work.

You can play for free, or you can pay for the upgrade. The upgrade lets you own property. We know a woman from Europe who makes real dollars dabbling in real estate.

okay hold on people let me give you the skinny on SecondLife or as we that play it like to nickname it SL

SL is a fully interactive ecosystem and economics system much like swg characters rely on eachother for gear (aside from the occasional reward from missions)

in secondlife you create your account (which btw right now is free to create [you only need a credit card to confirm age and if you buy land in game] ) there are two types of accounts.

the first is basic : basic users get less money every tuesday from the stippend system BUT they pay no monthly fees (im a basic user)

the second is the premium account users :

premium users get to buy and sell land at whim throughout secondlife. the trick is selling it at a good price to get a decent profit and still have enough to buy your next hunk of land (no i will not give you the money i worked damn hard for my linden bucks) premium users also get a weeee bit more money every tuesday from stippends. BUT the premium users get to pay monthly based on how much land they own (512 meters is $14 something a month US$)

now heres the snag point that everyone doesnt like. secondlife -IS- an adult community be prepared to see alot of mature rated stuff in the mature rated Simulators (kinda like swg's planets... sorta)

sex sells in sl. trust me it does...

now for the star wars fans... you can make the ultimate star wars characters in sl. and i mean ultimate you want to be a twilek with four lekku. go ahead build it. etc etc. i personally own like ten lightsabers... given to me by various friends. even if i only use one for my star wars LARP group in SL

the entire world in secondlife is malable. -YOU- as a character in SL get to decide what your secondlife looks like.

now i will admit those who enjoy pvp and fighting etc. will get bored. sometimes even i do. and if you do im sorry that secondlife isnt what you need for a game.

I've only played about 20 minutes in SL, but I've watched the play for a couple of weeks. If everyone didn't like the sex stuff, it wouldn't be there. So, I have to assume that a largish percentage of people like it.

The thing I like about the sex stuff is the hairstyling. I need to earn some linden to get some of those outrageously gorgeous styles!

well sex sells in SL and its a place where we can let go of our inhibitions and do what we want to with our avatars with no reprisal upon our physical forms (except certain groups that brainwash women into thinking their slaves in real life [ goreans stay away from them])

i mean i know sex sells. its how i suppliment my SWG client costs by selling erotic art that i create myself with the SL client that and bondage toys (now your going ohhhhh so thats what sharn's sig means)
