Looks like we have two concurrent lines of debate here:

1.) The fact that any game will get boring. Undeniable.

2.) The fact that all games are not created, developed, and/or released equallly. Evident.

I've seen WoW Beta. And I don't lie when I say that it could be released today and still be way ahead of the MMORPG curve than SWG is which has been live for a year.

So, sure, while any games get boring the same, the commitment and development of the companies that release them are not always the same.

The real shame is that SWG is even threatened by a game with less brand name and cultural recognition that hasn't even hit the shelves yet. After a year live it shouldn't even be a question.

But it is a question and SOE brought it on themselves.

Edited for various reasons.

I won't leave for WoW. I am not interested in the genre at all.

Having completed all of the theme parks myself, I agree with Jabe in that they are mindless. The ultimate geek moment for me was taking my picture next to the main characters. For me personally, the idea of posing with these iconic characters is what drove me to complete the missions. However, after time missions become extremely boring. It is the community and circle of friends in the game that helps make the game fresh and exciting.

This is no excuse however, for SOE to become lax in developing content and debugging the game. I think to some degree SOE is relying on roleplayers such as ourselves to keep interest in the game peaked. Granted the developers have a full plate, this does not excuse SOE relying on roleplayer's to keep the game afloat. I know alot of us are true roleplayer's. It's kind of like acting, it's fun to become someone in the universe and mold them into your image. I do believe that there are some people that roleplay SWG because they are bored. Certainly not anyone I've met in the game, but I'm sure that they exist. I don't think people should be forced into roleplaying just because SOE will not update/fix their content.

I feal really sad about all this. Before i met MidCo and the Rp community, i signed up with a guild in WoW. I am still a member of that guild. I was planning to leave SWG for WoW, but now that im in MidCo, and that the new JTL is comming out... i just don't know. On top of all that, i play PlanetSide. Another monthly fee game. PlanetSide just got interesting again. A huge event happened, so i went back to it. If i plan to get WoW, i guess i will dump PlanetSide. I would be sad to leave this game (even though it is filled with bugs!). Hmmm, WoW and SWG.. can i do it? :???:

Wow. What the hell is Wow? Nice to hear it's all developed and stuff but I'm with many of you. Star Wars is what brought me into playing this game in the first place. It's all about the characters and the setting, even if we have to make the setting much more real and interesting while JtL is worked on. I guess I'm lucky that I can be so focused. Unless, of course, many good role playing friends leave SWG for the promise of greener pastures, then I guess I wouldn't be so lucky... I know all good things come to an end. :???:

Bah. Screw WoW. Personally, fantasy games have never really interested me save for a select few. As for folks leaving, a lot will be missed, but I look on the bright side. This means a lot of the "I pwnd joo!" folks will be jumping ship. It also means you might be able to actually go to a POI and see something there rather than an empty cave. So, I can't wait for WoW to come out. Some many losers to be rid of....

There are a few things that I believe are not being paid due credit to in this discussion.

First, not all of the folks who have left or may leave SWG for WoW or any other reason wouldn't be leaving because they aren't "true Star Wars fans" or because they are immature "one uppers".

For example, I am a true Staw Wars fan. Have been since 1977 when I saw Episode 4 in the theatre. I've got receipts from Star Wars collectables that are older than many fans. IF I were to leave it wouldn't be because I like Star Wars any less or that I like "WoW type fantasy" any better.

Respect the fact that sometimes it's not the consumer, but the product.

Have you always liked and kept reading/watching/playing every Star Wars movie, book, game, etc? If not, does that make you less of a Star Wars fan? If you take the word "fan" at its root, fanatic, then yes you might be the type that gives love unconditionally to a product branded Star Wars, and maybe even discredit the motives of others who don't give it up the same way.

This is not to generalize on people who choose to stick with Star Wars Galaxies instead of trying something else. What it does do is level the same light that I see being shined on "the other half". Doesn't feel that fair does it?

I totally agree with you on this point. I think people can be a super Star Wars geek but not like the product. It doesn't make them any less of a fan, just a discriminating one. Not all products are created equal and not all consumers will buy said products. It's all about the marketing, baby.
