Oh, and Dwi, the animations through the snouts isn't fixable (the problem is that the same animation is applied to a large variety of models; you're going to get some issues like that unless there's custom anims applied only to Bothans).

But the clothes mapping *IS* fixable, and it's because of sloppy weighting (i.e. if the vert on the dress had the same weighting as the vert on the shoulder, it would behave the same).
I don't understand why the mapping for clothing is fixable and the snouts and such wouldn't be. Clothing stretches to fit frames....poorly in a lot of schems, truely, and that's where the mapping/wrapping problem comes in, even guys with stocky chests can't wear some jackets without their shirts showing through...but why would it be so hard to fix snouts or muzzles for Doshs and Bothans?
It has to do with how the animations are being solved. Clothing/skin is designed to fit around the animation (because it is designed to move according to the skeleton of the model), so in the act of waving "hi," everything moves when the bones in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotate.

The problem here you're describing (hands targeting faces, for example) is that one animation is being targeted onto every possible race, at every possible scale. Technically speaking, if every race is using the same skeleton, and the scaling for height is uniform (the same % applied to all bones), then every time someone pats themselves on the head, it should look right.

Except. When the shape of the head changes. There's no collision detection on the characters in SWG (and even if they did, it still wouldn't work in this example; I'll write a dissertation on how collission detection is used in game animation engines later if you really want), so the animations play the same on every character. So if they're designed to hit "normal" head shapes (i.e. human), hitting the top of a Calamari becomes problematic because his "target" for his hand to hit is still the human model, which even though it isn't there, would be an inch or five underneath the top of the Calamari's head. The same problem is repeatable with the Bothan's long face, or someone's very fat belly (patting a stomach for instance), Rodian's ear things and mohawks, Twilek's lekku (and remember, they can be in like 8 different positions), etc.

To fix this, they would have to open every animation file and then "fix" it for every single race, adjusting the hand positions for each file, and then save the files out as new ones. Not even considering the oppresive amount of work this would cause the animation team, this would make the RAM footprint for SWG waaaayyyyyy huger than it is now, as you would be multiplying the animation bank for the game x8.

So, since it's feasibly impossible to have an animation be all things to all races, they target the ones that are the most similar in size and shape(Human, Dosh, Zabrak, Twi'lek, Rodian) and try and make the anims look as good as possible on those (and even then there's racial discrepancies).

The amount of animations that actually look "bad" on the other three races are relatively low, so this is usually the path of least resistance for the game teams.

Seriously, I will quit if I see people wearing cowboy hats in SWG. Quit life. I see enough grown men thinking they are cowboys in RL. Keep it outta my games.

I don't think we need RL clothing in-game. All the schems in-game now are from the movies, I'd rather just see new art that made them look better.

I loved all these great ideas! Except the cowboy hats. I'm like seriously fantasizing here. Here's another fantasy one for me:

-You have a gradual need to eat/drink (similar to the classic Ultima near-simulation role playing games) or else you slowly start to actually lose a little in stats -- oh I know, how annoying but hardly an imposition

-I'd almost say the same for sleep but who wants to have to fade out even for several minutes in order to take a nap

-More clothes! I mean, I really want to see more varieties now (except for cowboy hats)

-Electro-whip weapon (it's in the book after all) with animation

-Ability to make consoles actually read/say something so it doesn't take a crafter alone to make any kind of story device *sigh*

This I would love. It would really be nice for RP if you could simply point your weapon at someone without actually having to attack them. Think of the uses the Imperials would have, or the ability to have a mexican standoff between two players.

Personally, since I'm a Swordsman through and through, I would love to just be able to bury my sword into a table or the ground. Just for the effect of "go ahead, piss me off." :D

Lot of good ideas. Being as a lot of the ones I'd like in have already been mentioned, I'll just mention those I'd like in that have nott.

-All proffessions fixed and revamped.
-Everyone with accounts 1 day or older have had their money
eimbursed for paying to beta.
-Added the rest of the corellian system to the game. Talus(or is it Tralus?
I forget which is in game), Drall, and Selonia are now accessable via
starports.
-Buffs have been removed from the game.
-Armor protection stats have been moved around so that more than one
armor type can have good stats. Thus it will no longer be required to
have full composite armor to have the best armor avalable.
-Added more PSGs so that those who don't wish to wear armor can still
get a benefit. These new PSGs will have encumbrance penalties in line
with their resistances.
-Battlefields actually work.
-You no longer get badges for going to POIs, and all badges for visiting
them have been removed.
-With increase in rank in a faction you receive a new rank insignia which
can be equiped.
-Vehicles with two seats can now hold a passenger. Passengers can fire
from their seat at a high reduction in accuracy.
-All CSRs have been fired and replaced with personel who have actually
played the game and know what's going on.
-Decent loot now drops on mobs more often. Garbage should drop less.
-Added new weapons for every profession. Each profession should now
have at least one weapon for every damage type in game.
-Jedi revamps taken out of the game, combat balance finally put in. We
appologise for ignoring this for so long.
-More droids now craftable by DEs
-Added new profession:Mechanic. Mechanics can build new vehicles, as
well as repair disabled vehicles.
-More vehicles added in game, including combat vehicles.
-New ability for master squad leaders: Air strike. large AOE attack with
differnt animations depending upon faction. Imperials will have turbolaser
blast from starships overhead. Rebels will have Y-wings fly by and launch
Torpedos. Hutts will have various "Uglies" fly in firing lasers. Neutrals
will have X-95 Headhunters fly in launching concussion missiles.
-Better faction equipment now avalable.
-Emperor's retreat now has large perimeter wall with turrents along the
wall.
-Corellia has been returned to control of the IMPERIAL dictat.
-All Chiss removed from game.
-All mobs have been made more difficult. High end mobs should no longer
be soloable. (Such as rancors)
-Faction NPCs will no longer be dancing on destroy missions.
-Appropriate loot drops depending on mob killed. If a mob was using a
certain weapon, it is now possible to loot that weapon.
-More bacakpacks and other containers added to the game.
-More NPC missions with decent rewards added to game.
-New 1337 filter added. It is now possible to filter out all leet speak.
-New scaring graphic/option enabled. It is now possible to get and keep
scars and such from combat after healing if the player wishes.
-Image designers no longer needed for stat migration. Original stat
migration time has been put back in the game.
-More faction items of worth purchasable from recruiters
-More faction structures added to game.
-Garrisons added to the game. A garrison is purchased from a faction
recruiter and acts like a city hall. Except with each upgrade, a garrison
can aquire more facilities, all of which can be purchased from a faction
recruiter. Facilities include: Cloning facilities, landing pad, hospitals,
machine shops, barracks, watch towers, sensors, and shield generators.
For more information, see the SOE site.(Or ask me being as only I know)
-We have hired more event coordinators for every server. This way PEX
doesn't have to server hop as much and events can be scheduled for
every time zone, not just pacific.
-Melee is actually melee and has been restricted to a range of 5m for ALL attacks.
-You can again call out faction pets, creature pets, and droids at the same time.
-Your faction rank determines how many faction pets you can call out. Minimum of Sgt, maximum of 10 at Col. Can only have out 1 AT-ST though.

I got more, but it's always hard to remember em when It's time to post em.
(Yes, I keep adding more. :P)
