Okay, thanks to my dad's Tivo I actually got to see this epsiode after posting all that. I remembered starbucks skorpions from the caprica thing. But this episode, and I may be wrong, featured: Skorp, Makarovs, and the CZ52-72 whichever is the old russian 7.62 pistol. I almost bought a Makarov, my personal preference being the PA63. I think they were polish or hungarian, and were a nice two tone. Instead of buying two of those I opted for a beretta clone.
I didnt get a look at the marine carbines, but I could take a second look.

I don't see the immediate recognizability angle as fact. Because, most watchers won't know a skorpion machine pistol or any of the other weapons immediately. If they really wanted watchers to make a fast identification with the props then they would have used AK-47's/M-16s/Colt .45/Berettas, etc. The wide variety of watchers know those.
What I see is them going for more exotic and rare looking weapons without having to create them themselves from scratch or rig up extra parts...and pay for it. Why go for a Skorpion of all things for easy ID to viewers outside of the former Eastern Bloc? Put your money on an Uzi, M-16, even Beretta if it's about immediate recognizability.

I realize thats the point, after that was already said by X'an or whoever.
They have used thungs like FAL's and hk's, I think maybe those french carbines (famas?) with the full length carry handle.
I totally apreciate their decision to cut costs that way. They probably have a really limited number of guns so we may see those, and maybe some stuff from the SG set being recycled throughout the show

Plus, most ground base forces would have been on the planets that the Cylons nuked, the forces that were on the ships that escaped would have been the normal naval crews with whatever Marine units were attached to them at the time. Add to that the fact that the Galactica was being decommissioned at the time of the attack and I'd bet that there was only a small skeletal unit of marines that survived on the Galactica...which would have only been there to provide security at the decomissioning ceremony.warsloth wrote:Yeah, they may not have a whole lot of ground force leadership, so they chuck in some naval/space officers to lead the marines. kinda makes sense when you think about filling a command chain with a handful of leftovers.
As for the tech of the show...it's a TV show with a per episode budget that is very low and, like X'an said, almost EVERYTHING else on the show has a low tech look to it. You could also argue that, since this is supposedly set in the future and not our Earth's future, all humans design things the same way and based on the same esthetics...soooooo, 2 separated and different cultures could design similarly looking weapons/items because the same, innate thinking processes that are present in all humans created them. This can be seen throughout our own ancient history, many civilizations created/invented similar things without ever having any contact with eachother.

Dude, no way, because that's TOO easily recognizeable. It's all about the suspension of disbelief. A pulse rifle doesn't look real. Not even the fanciest French gun looks as wild as that thing (or as bulky).Keer wrote:What I see is them going for more exotic and rare looking weapons without having to create them themselves from scratch or rig up extra parts...and pay for it. Uzi? Miami Vice
M-16? G.I. Joe
Beretta? Cops, any John Woo movie.
AK-47? Hello terrorist.
The guns they're using look real and not fictional. It's not entirely necessary that you recognize the exact make and model of the gun, just that it looks like a real gun to you, which most sci-fi weapons do NOT. Think Ewok language in Star Wars. Real language that has structure and form (and therefore recognized as real language by our subconcious) but not immediately understood by anyone outside of the Phillipines, and therefore is alien.

That's....what I been saying. If its all about immediate recognition, as you said, then those more common guns would not be exotic (read "played out" like the TV examples that I, then you, mentioned). Looking back at my first post on this I say that clearly ("at least they got Skorps instead of surplus A-Team AK-47s.... How exotic is that?". Credit due to them getting those particular props, etc, etc.)
Now that it's all about suspension of disbelief...I agree. Guns that don't look otherworldly, but exotic enough to make most of the audience ooh- ahh....and friendly to a tight budget.

Just so I stop grinding my teeth, the A-Team used a full auto version of the Ruger Mini-14. Its called an AC556 or some such nonsense.
Thank you, drive through.
And the weapons and vehicle choices they are using does not affect my immersion what so ever. Sorry if I came off that way earlier. I am basically agreeing with you guys as to why it doesn't matter.

Dr. Julian Bashir= Siddig El Fadil or after season 4 Alexander Siddig (Changed his stage name as El Fadil was thought to be too "ethnic" by network execs)
Dr Gaius Baltar = James Callis
Although they do look a lot alike

I been kinda thinking they have lost their direction this season. I mean I am not sure what they are looking for or doing at this point. How do they get to earth? Etc... I think the combat scenario of the last episode was pretty damn cool and the engineer dying to save the ship was very Spock-ish.
