Ok, I'm a huge FF buff and while I agree with most of you and I did love FF VII how can you forget about it's forefathers. FF II and FF III were by all means the greatest games in the FF story line. Cecil was the best main character in any RP I've ever played. And then III with all of it's possibilities these games were well ahead of their time and should be cherished.
Now for the newer FF games I have to admit I never finished VIII-X and have not played XI but I really enjoyed all of them, I just no longer had the time it takes to play through the story line. I'd have to say of these I too like VIII more then VII. I liked the characters and the card game they added. The movie scenes were excellent as well, the story line was just great. Actually I may have to dig that sucker out and play it now.

I have to say, Fantasy Star was pretty weak RPG sauce. I thought the story was weak and the game play to be too repetetive and boring. Lots of games are repetetive, but there was something about this one that made it more irritating. Also, what the hell is a MAG? Did they ever define that?
The characters you could make (while limited) were pretty nifty lookin' though.

C'mon Ekade, if you're going to bring Phantasy Star into the discussion about Final Fantasy at least use it original lame-ass spelling. I'd like to have been in that board meeting... "Lets call it Fantasy Star... no wait there is already another popular RPG with Fantasy in the title, lets do it hip-hop ghetto style and name it with a PH like saying Phat instead of Fat! The kids will think we are SO COOL!!"
Truth be told I didn't hate the first Phantasy Star but I didn't much care for everyone after that.
If you want to add some RPGs to the mix here are my favs:
Dragon Warrior
Breath of Fire
Mario RPG
Suikoden
Star Ocean
Legend of Mana
Paper Mario
Lunar
Chrono Trigger
Wild Arms
Xenogears
Skies of Arcadia
Golden Sun
Might & Magic
Wanderers of Y's
Wizardry
Wizards and Warriors
Ultima
Diablo
Dungeon Seige
Knights of the Old Repuplic
Note: I left out FF becauase we pretty much covered that. I also left out sequels titles, they are listed by series. There is also games like Legend of Zelda that techically fall under RPG but I consider them action/adventure games.

Now Seret knows his RPG's!! Those are some of the best titles by far. I'm particularly fond of Breath of Fire, Star Ocean, Legend of Mana, and Lunar. I've not played the new Star Ocean though but the original was excellent.
There's another one I loved name Dragoon or something like that where your characters turned into dragons or something like that, it was pretty sweet as well although somewhat similar to Breath of Fire.

Not every RPG really grabbed me. I could not get into Ultima. I played Bard's Tale, Might and Magic (yeah, I am talking LOAD"*",8,1 babay).
Then Nintento and Sega showed up and I played stuff like Legend of Zelda and PHantasy Star.
I think I took a swing at Pool of Radiance but did not care for it. Eye of the Beholder was pretty neat. This was on the Amiga. ooh.. another awesome game.. Defender of the Crown. Not exactly an RPG but it was so cool.
Then I took a break from gaming for a few years.. I think the next RPG I got into was Baldur's Gate. I so dug that. Baldur's Gate II is still one of my fav's.
Ooh.. I did like Fallout. That game was so clever. For the life of me I could not get that mangy dog to live through the last area. Those big fat machine gun totin dudes would literally skin him alive. I loved that dog for his trip attack.. I think my ranger in the current D&D campaign I am playing in is gonna get herself a wolf so I can do the same thing.. muhahaha.. but I digress.
So after baldur's gate I took a stab at Asheron's Call.. Played for four months before cancelling.
Then I find myself in SWG.. the best gaming experience ever.

Seret pretty much covered all the greats but i gotta go ahead and second the motion on a few of those Xenogears had one of the best storylines of any rpg in my opinion . I own all 3 of the suikoden games something about having 108 characters to build your party with just does it for me .

I know what you are talking about, but I was pro-Nintendo during that era (yea people used to take sides) - so I never really played it.

Jabe and I were Nintendo freaks, which is why Dragon Warrior was my oldest love when it comes to RPGs but some stand out more than others, not just for their greatness but what they brought to the table.
While Final Fantasy I gave us the first chance to "upgrade" our charater skills Ultima gave us that first taste of character class variety. I remember thinking how neat it was I could get such a variety of character in my group. Lunar was the first RPG I played (on Sega CD) that introduced real voices to RPGs and Mario RPG showed not all RPGs had to be about medevil fantasy. Xenogears was another amazing leap in RPGs for me because it was so interesting and combined so many genres (sci-fi, action, fighting, fantasy) that RPGS have never touched before.
So all those games on my list we played and still remain appreciated because without them I wouldn't be the gamer I am today.
