Well basicly we need it for federal security. As I've stated before my states regulation on drivers licences, and state ID for that matter, is a joke. To get either you need only two forms of idetification and the only accepteble forms are birth certificate (easily forged), Social Security Card (I can buy one off the street), or a bill to me with my "current" adress on it (I could easily fake that as well). Not only is it tremedously easy for some one to get a california form of ID we have politicians here that are trying to get it so that illegal imigrates can have them too. If you ever left you where surrounded by idiots then you might have been in California. As for the big brother government setiment, get over it. The feds already have access to the info that would be on it. They just want it to have some standards in issuing for national security.
As for the cost all I have to say it so what. I mean come on the buracracy of the government is a huge joke. My state spends an estimated 10k per student and our public schools are a mess (just look at any one of my post and you can tell that being able to spell was low on their priority list). Private schools spend an average of 3k per student and have way better results. So whats the problem here? Is it too little money going into the school system? No, it inempt school boards and teacher union not wanting to do their jobs, teaching children.
