The list of features I've been running against any MMO I see has been this:
  1. open pvp/worthwhile pvp (ranking system, rewards, etc)
  2. player housing/cities
  3. player centric-economy/crafting
  4. fun, strategic combat system
  5. extremely customizable templates
  6. least amount of treadmill/grind as possible. Content centered on the endgame, not the grind

6. 4/10

It gets a passing grade, but its not my absolute ideal MMO. Just fun to play and free.

Griven, and others, I wouldn't openly post actual specific ideas in the open. I have been PM'ing some with some development ideas I have drawn up. I have a wishlist of features I would hope to achieve with a graphics engine, and other stuff. I need to find a programmer type to give me a brief consultation to see what on this wishlist is feasable.

Griven I would be happy to toss ideas back and forth with you in PM's to see if we can coordinate efforts and find a programmer to work with us. There are plenty of mod teams and stuff that love this kind of thing.

I know a couple guys from school that I haven't contacted yet.

Guys, seriously, feel free to post ideas openly here back and forth.

No one is mining these forums (or really any others) looking for ideas on MMOs. Game teams typically have a problem with too many chefs in the kitchen as it is, and have a hard enough time implementing the ideas they want. Typically, they wind up cutting features rather than adding more due to time constraints.

Trust me when I say nobody's going to be stealing your game ideas.

Hrrrmmmm.....I've been watching this thread develop, and wondering what I could do to contribute. I don't know nearly enough to be able to help program or anything like that, but upon reviewing some of the NPC and game interface dialogue in SWG, I think I have it. I offer my services as proofreader/copy editor.

The sexy toons is the hard part. I think that you'll find that there is more agreement among guys as to what is a sexy lady than you'll find among women as to what is a sexy man. And If you want girls in the game, say 15 to 18, they have a whole 'nother preference list.

For me, movement is the sexy angle...SWG has the looks down pretty well, but the females run and walk like male jocks. EQ2 has a better female walk, but it still isn't good, and Second Life has a really awful stilted walk.

Many of the dances in SWG look fairly awful on women, but look fine on men. (:wishes more men would dance).

Therefore, my impression is that making sexy toons is very hard.

Anyway... I really need someone to talk with about the limitations of current engines. There are some things I want to accomplish similar to the SWG, and upcoming STO, but I plan for mine to be different in it's own right.

There is a concept that I am sure everyone has heard of... K.I.S.S. no, not the band.

Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Gotta have good basics... pretty graphics and stuff are secondary, or at least come second. Once the foundation is set, build the house.

Any freeware engine sucks balls. You shouldn't even worry about those or even making the game until you have completed the following:

1) Login servers with secure authentication, account and character management and integration with the billing system that enables or disables accounts.

2) Patch servers.

3) Launchpad client that is fully tested against the patch servers. Every MMO's biggest night mare is a launchpad that fails patching and strands the user from downloading sunsequent patches including a patch to get the launchpad working again.

4) Cluster management and backup rotation.

Then you're ready to create an engine and start beta testing.

This does not sound like a shoestring operation, Jabe. How would one go about presenting the idea to a money provider?

Jabe... you can take care of the things you listed right? Okay, so you aren't playing the game now, so consider it your new "thing"

Those things have been done by several different groups. It's included in lots of multiplayer games, with the exception of the billing part (in some cases)

Freeware is not my intention. I have no use for existing engines at this point. If I get some actual volunteers who know what they are doing, we could have something big on our hands. Possibly a chance to make some money in spite of the odds.
