Battlestar Galactica

I think you may be right there. I'm actually pretty sure you are, BUT....

I hope we're both wrong and Starbuck has to outwit and outmanuever that thing on the ground.

There was an episode in the original series where one of the pilots was stranded with a single Cylon. I got a feeling they wanted to explore that again.

Are you talking about the one where apollo ended up in the farm colony that had the one cylon who fancied himself a gunslinger and Apollo had to fight him in a quickdraw at high noon type episode?

Edited to say wow, punctuation can save lives.

They had said several times "the cockpit looks too small for a pilot" but the Cylon could just be strapped in there controling it with his computer brain, and no "hands on" type interface... looks like we'll have to see.

And damn, if they didn't just turn the whole series on its ear.

Cylons? Organic ships?

Next thing you know, Minmei's going to come sing a song and make eveyrone love each other ;)

But seriously, this was another GREAT ep.

I picked up the pilot/miniseries a week or so back myself. I loved it too! I don't have any tv except for what I buy or rent on dvd though; So I'll be waiting for seasonal releases myself. The only thing I did miss was the original theme song as opposed to the rather bland/military track they went with this go around. I know when they made the 'new' Doctor Who movie for Fox about 7 years ago... they took the original theme song and just made it sound newer. Wished they'd done that with Galactica.

"To be in lovvvvve, could be the greatest feeling that a girl can dreammmm."

*Cylons having convulsions*

Okay...now to the nitty gritty.

I have a couple reservations about this past episode. I like the organic ship twist. Brings more mystery to the Cylons. Personalizes the fight in a way. I'll never watch another dogfight the same way.

But squeezing the nerves and muscles of it to get it into stable flight? And then space flight? And then outmaneuvering an ace pilot (Apollo) in space when you're already in his sights?

And I'm really not trying to mention that she plugged the hole in the ship by sticking her crumpled up uniform in the hole (whoops! Looks like I mentioned it.).

It may be a space suit, but come on! I guess all that turbulence and strong winds wasn't strong enough to blow the suit back into the "cockpit". Or that the air pressure from the ship's "lungs" wasn't enough to cough that suit out in a vacuum of space.

My imagination's got marathon legs but it also knows where the Finish Line is. The overall bare bones of the story was good, but that whole ship piloting/dogfighting thing left me with a "Get the frack outta here!" feeling. A bit too far on that one.

Commendations to the show for having Apollo still sporting the face scars he got in the prison break episode (Bastille Day). This is now 2 episodes later. They didn't have to leave the scars there, but a nice touch.

The basic piloting of the ship didn't bother me as much (I was trying to pretend that the muscles controlled levers, like they grafted the muscles and tendons directly onto the mechanical interface), and I sorta let the suit thing slide (it is after all a vaccuum-safe suit, so maybe she was able to uh, brace it with something? Yeah, that's it...), but the ace dogfighting thing WAS a bit on the "much" side. I mean, she's looking through a tank-slit. She'd have to be omnipresent/omniscient to know where Apollo was that whole time.

BUT. I felt they redeemed themselves IMMEDIATELY after that with the wing waggle. (doing short lef/right rolls that make it look like someone doing a "so-so" gesture with their hand).

I keep telling my wife that there's a sort of unwritten code that waggling your wings is a "hey, I'm your buddy" type of move to do when your radio's out. Enemies never think to do it because A), they're typically being shot at, and B), once you've fooled the good guys, and open up the first salvo, they're all coming after you anyway. So it's a "sure fire" way to tell your friends "hey, don't shoot me, I'm your pal."

And what did Starbuck and Apollo do immediately after Apollo saw the writing on the wings? They waggled. It almost brought a tear to my eye.

thats what I was expecting her to do (the waggle)
And yeah the suit in the hole thing was bugging me. Its small things like that that really stick in your mind in shows... and I think the way their "marines" or whatever operate is not that great. I think they should have made them a little less like present day, after all withing 8 years we will have armor suits with integrated computers and garbage... they can make casts around broken bones, and Im assuming will be made of the same composite ceramics that level 4 plates consist of. (but computers would need to be un-networked in the suits for the new cylon combat)
I had an interesting writing project im working on that has similar infantry armor, don't want to spill the beans on that one...
I love the way the ships maneuver in space, and many of the other things, like practically silent battles... but they need to watch their believability. I loved Farscape, but hated things like people surviving in space on occasion (once John jumped from one ship to another, and in the last mini Chianna, but D'argo was explained...) that really bugged me. The puppets were kinda funny, but I got around it. Partly because of my hatred for the overuse of CG. When models and puppets are used well, or married correctly, you have some beautiful stuff...
(edited to add)
I guess if the suit had enough bulk to it, and if it was really sturdy, once she got into space, the vacuum would try to suck it out, so the pressure would possibly cause a good tight seal... the suits do have those hard panels and stuff that would help clog the hole, think of it like a bucket with a small hole in the bottom, filled with water, and a piece of rubber crammed in there...

I don't know, I just remember them being stuck together. I was like 3 when I saw it.

I just love the show. I haven't had dry eyes completely through any of the episodes. I really care about the characters.

You know I discovered something about myself. I have watched the pilot and the first episode after pilot and that is it. I don't think I like the rigidity of watching a show that is on a specific day/time. I will have to buy the dvd set. I hate watching regular tv. I love reruns. This show is great but I can't bring myself to watch it.
