Star Wars DVD Changes Thread

Secondly, finally got around to watching ESB. There is a exposition with the Emperor about the "boy who destroyed the Death Star". Come now..you can't tell me that Vader didn't know he had a kid? What did Amidala just have a sudden thyroid problem and gain large amounts of weight? The only way this can be explained is that she gives birth while he's away...that's the only thing that would make sense at all...

there are many other explanations, which should be explained in ep3...

my guess:

amidala gets scared of anakin or vader at some point, and fakes her death and goes into hiding (maybe pushing him farther to the dark side?) ....anakin thinks her dead and gone, not knowing he had knocked her up, so then she has the twins in hiding and he never knows...

that's just one explanation...

another could be that when he gets tossed into the lava so he can turn into vader, the trauma leaves him with some amnesia (lame way out)

another could be amidala dies in child birth and someone else (obi-wan) steals the twins away, and seperates them so they won't be found out...


but I think that amidala has to be dead, or she has to be so far away from anakin that he can't sense her...otherwise she has no reason to give her children away AND seperate them on top of it...

cuz if amidala is alive and anywhere near him in the galaxy, he could sense her...

There's a screenshot from the film involving Anakin and Padme, and she's obviously about 6-7 mos pregnant at that point, so he's aware that she's pregnant, and she knows that he knows.

So any theories should probably revolve around her dying during childbirth. I'm guessing it's a bit of a combo platter of what you've got above; that she dies during childbirth during the time that Anakin's off fighting somewhere. Anakin blames Obi-Wan for involving him in this war instead of letting him have a relationship (nevermind that Jedis are not supposed to be IN relationships period), loses it (due to Amidala dying, his mother dying, stress from Obi-Wan, AND whatever Palpatine's been feeding him about the Republic), he and Obi-Wan fight to the death, Anakin goes in the volcano, and never learns of what happened to his kids.

Maybe Amidala's hidden the twins from him (he thinks there's only one?). Maybe not. At any rate, he later finds Luke Skywalker, and does the easy math to figure out that's one of his kids, etc.

Does anyone find it unsettling that Temura Morrison's voice is being used for Boba Fett(granted this would fit with the continuity of the prequels)? Boba Fett's words sounds so much grittier and you could just hear the anger underneath the voice. The new voiceover's don't cast the same impression with me. I understand why he did it, but it ruins the whole mystique of the Fett character for me(some would argue that the prequels have damaged it enough).

Yeah, this bothers me, even though it "makes sense" to Lucas that it fits with his now backwards continuity problems he keeps creating for himself. This is yet one more example of the original films' excellent work suffering because Lucas decided to pull this garbage out of his ass.

Case in point: If he KNEW that Boba Fett was Jango Fett's clone when he wrote the original trilogy (which he claims that all of this was written out 20 years ago), and that all of the Stormtroopers are ALSO Jango Fett's clones (albeit significantly less effective), then why didn't he give all of the Stormtroopers Boba Fett's voice in the first place?

As an ancillary to this point: Now factor in Leia's reply of "aren't you a little short to be a Stormtrooper?" She would have KNOWN he wasn't a Stormtrooper, and so would have ever single trooper who saw him walk past. If I had a twin brother, and someone tried to impersonate him who was a good foot shorter, I think I'd notice.

In the end, I don't see why we can't just keep the original voices the way they were. They sound fine to me.

I am of the opinion that he did not have it all written 20 years ago. If it was written 20 years ago... he changed it a lot (aka pulled stuff out of his ass).

You would think so (and so would I). I heard awhile back that he was going to re-dub the trooper's voices. If the troopers voices are dubbed (with Jango Fett's voice) in this version, then they're clones. If not, then I guess they're conscripts, which makes me happy.

also did anyone notice the intro to the dvd/menu pages?

there are 3 different versions, just like they did on dvd eps 1 and 2

on ep 4 there are:

escape pod jetting from star destoyer, then all menus are luke and jawa scenes

trench run menus

and yavin temple hangar menus

I thought the animatics were done very tastefully. I think that's true of the prequel releases as well. The menus are just awesome on all of the SW releases.

just watched ESB last night and I must say, the 5.1 surround sound was waaay better than ANH

lots of great surround sound effects...maybe it was becasue of more outer space stuff, but it was great...lotsa room rumbling bass!

AND i didn't see any squares around tie fighters like in ANH either, so that was nice...

Yeah, the squares kind of piss me off. It's just bad work on the part of Lowry Digital(they restored the films). I guess all the blame can't be put on ILM for that. I will say that the colors were much more vibrant in ESB than in ANH. ANH the color scheme was more grey/black which portrayed the coldness of the Empire. ESB had a much brighter color scheme.

As much as I dislike some of the changes and as much as I've railed on him before, I'd never go as far as some of these people that the article refers to. They do sound really nutty.

I think that they all need an interview with Triumph "The Insult Comic Dog". :lol:
