I think thats a good observation and based on the detail put in to everythign else, I am sure its intentional. It will be interesting to find out where everyone went.

The lack of bodies IS interesting, but there's two scenarios to consider that explain a lot of it away:

1). Nuclear blasts leave little bio material near the actual blast area. That planet was *bombarded* with nukes. Major cities shouldn't even have buildings still standing, techincally.

2). The "Herculenium effect." There was a small town just North of Pompei (can't remember the name of it, I think it was Herculenium) that was completely buried by the volcano Vesuvius when it erupted. Geologists who uncovered the town thousands of years later (like, this century) were confused as to why there were no bodies caught in the lava, like there were in Pompei (they were buried in the pumice that fell from the sky).

As it turns out, the entire town had run down to the seashore because they saw a battery of Roman ships which they presumed were coming to rescue them. The geologists found the enitre town huddled into some beach houses. They were all obliterated (just bones left) when the pyroclastic flow finally hit them.

We could find out at some future point that everyone was trying to get to "rescue points" expecting the Galactica to send Raptors to come save everyone (like they did when they grabbed Dr. Gaius and Hero stepped off the ship).
