Hi Guys back from an unexpected Business trip, but before I left I had a very interesting conversation with a CSR about Connecting to JTLS. As many of you no doubt remember I was concerned that JTLS was going to be for Broadband users only due to it basically being a Twitch-based Shooter. Looks like that isn't the case. This all started when a CSR sent me a /tell inquiring about my name, apparently someone reported it. I was able to clear that up in no time, but before he left I asked if I could ask a question about JTLS. He gave the standard, it depends and please be brief. I told him that I was very, very concerned that since I was a Dial up user that I would not be able to play JTLS.
His reply was this, (And this is an exact copy from my chat log.)
Don't worry about that. The space expansion will actually have much less lag for Dial up users than the ground game, mainly because there is no flora, or ground to draw. I have played the Expansion on my Fiancées computer, and she has horrible dial up.. I mean 28.800, and I connected just fine with no noticeable lag. There will probably be some in larger PVP battles, but for the missions you should be fine.
Then why did SOE say Broadband only for the Beta?
Because of the insane download, it's Two and a half Gigs. No way anyone on dial up could download that in under a week, we mainly did that because we didn't want dial up users to complain, but if you can get a way to download the beta fast, or get it burned to DVD, you should still be able to participate.
So there you have it guys. I want to thank Zannon for letting me post this, I was unsure as to if it would be okay or not. Also to reinforce the CSR statement I have had a few people who are in the beta test and are on Dial up tell me that the game runs with a lot less lag than the ground game even in heavy combat. So given this I have pre-ordered JTLS, and will probably do my update at work (I have a T-3 there) See you guys in space.
JTLS Dial Up Users Rejoice!!!
Thanks for the info Li Quan. I'm glad to hear we won't lose any of the dial-up players when JtL comes out. What the CSR said makes perfect sense.
I see no problem posting that info here, as it is open info and not Beta specific.
But I have to know, why did someone report your name? What could they possibly find offensive about it? Sounds like a normal Chinese name to me.

Good news, and it makes sense.
When we used to play WWIIOnline, I was playing over dialup, and out of the four of us (all of which are here) I had the best piloting record (Skarr will of course contest this by saying he made a bunch of top 10 pilot kill boards, but his kill to death/crash ratio was below mine and alarming for a professional real-life pilot ;D).
So basically, yeah, flight sim games do pretty well on dial-up from my personal experience.

Someone told the CSR that it was a copyright Violation form a D.C. Comic character, and that the person was an employee of D.C.
I informed the CSR that I was an avid collector of Comics as far back as the 20's, and that no Character has or ever had existed for Marvel, or D.C. and if he found it I would delete the character and apologize In fact I continued when I went to the SWG Fan fest two Lucasarts developers complemented me on the name, one even said it sounded like it came straight from the Ranch. (Apparently George Lucas can throw out an amazing number of Star Wars sounding names without really even thinking about it)
I think I know what happened, when I first was on the server I was approached by a master Bounty hunter who asked me about my name. I told him I used the same name on Kettemoor, and that it is a long time RP character that I like to play. He then told me that if I would delete the character and let him use the name (He wanted a Jedi with a Jedi sounding name he said) he would get me to Jedi in a couple weeks. I told him no thanks that Li Quan was a scoundrel not a Jedi, and that Power Gaming was not my bag., but I gave him several Jedi sounding names that he could use... He then called me a RP "Faggot" and said I had better never go Overt around him. I think he is the one who sent my name in.
Its really amusing if you think about it. I just chalked it up to another paint chip eating l337 d00d, but I guess he couldn't let go.

People. Hate. Jedi. And I think it stinks that you got reported cause I bet that was their motivation, He's a jedi.. That bastard..
But that belongs in another thread.. I like Jedi, I think the good ones like yourself get scrutinized with the Owned J00s and such...
And I think it awesome that Dial up guys can still play, as I may be on dial up for a while when I move into my new house... (I hope not though..)

Thanks Lok'i, I just want to be clear though I am not a Jedi, nor do I play one on T.V.

I don't want to get too far off-topic so I'll start with "Viva La Dial-up Users!"
Some people just want to grief. Besides, even if Li Quan Kane was a obscure comic book character from some long lost book why in the world would it matter in SWG. You end-user agreement only covers SW characters, not otherwise. I once saw a player guild called JLA with members like J'honn Jonz and Kal-El. There's also our buddy and resident Master Architect Jorhel. Should they get the name boot?
Ok rant over. Basically anyone who cries like a little baby because someone won't give their name to them is pond scum to me in this galaxy. I hope I never have to meet that prick.

You know...in a round about way the guy did me a favor. If the CSR didn't send me a tell I wouldn't have been able to ask him about JTLS. I mean lets face it the party line on the JTLS forums right now is,
OMGWTFBBQ n0ob dL uZrZ R t3h sUxXo0rZ Git Bb or U wUnT pLAz.
Really SOE should put it in the FAQ that if you can connect to SWG you can play JTLS just fine. I know a lot of Download users who have already canceled their accounts because they were under the impression that SOE basically screwed the Dial up users. Forum Experts were telling them this and not once did they step in and say. "No that isn't correct." Love the game, but I totally fail to Understand SOE, or Lucasarts logic.

It's a touchy thing, actually. The majority of core users are actually THAT DUMB that they wouldn't understand why you could play JtL on a modem but not the Beta. Even saying "because you couldn't handle the 250M download" wouldn't suffice, as players would say "but I'll just let it run for two days!!!"Li Quan Kane wrote:Really SOE should put it in the FAQ that if you can connect to SWG you can play JTLS just fine. Then SOE would have to come out and explain that their modems would tie up the servers for everyone else, and they wouldn't get as many people in Beta as they could if they just disallowed modems, etc. It would become an endless explanation cycle.
So, it's just easier to say "Broadband only for the JtL Beta" and let everyone else jump to conclusions, because it's what people do anyway.

you were also on a way superior dial up than me....mine was horrible, so I was lagging behind everyone else...
AND although I was in top10 kills in the 110, it was also the biggest target in the air, besides the german bomber, AND I "turn" fought in it (big no no)because boom and zoom is boring
but you can be my wingman anyday...
