Han Solo's "Reward". Whatever Happenned To It?

Luke: "She's rich."
Han: "Oh yeah? How rich?"
Luke: "If you were to rescue her the reward would be-...!"
Han: "What?"
Luke: "Well, more wealth than you could imagine."
Han: "I can imagine quite alot."

We see Han Solo and Chewbacca loading this "reward" into the Millenium Falcon, just prior to the Battle of Yavin.

The fate of this reward is the one question that has jabbed at my mind each time I see Episode 5, in which it's clear that Solo still owes Jabba the Hutt.

Now the possible things that a guy like Solo could do with a horde of credits is endless, but the lack of even a mention of financial irresponsibility in Episode 5 was strange. Surely, not enough to torpedo the whole plot, but odd since Solo goes about Episode 4 yacking about money and debts. The audience would have bought "extensive repairs to the Falcon" or "raided by pirates".

Has there ever been any mention or even sly wink regarding this in any EU source or SW lore? If so, I've never seen it.

Everyone knows he just took a few space bucks for gas and food and then he left.

Oh wait.... that was Lonestar.

The first way I see it is the "reward" Luke tells Han about is just made up to get him to help him find this Leia chick. Luke doesn't know what he'd really get in return, but he'll tell Han anything to get him to go and Han only expresses interest in one thing, a reward.

Think of it this way. Say the reward was in those containers getting loaded into the falcon in Episode IV like you said. Say those containers were anything, supplies, weapons, goods to sell back to Jabba to settle his debt.

So initially Han leaves Yavin with his reward, offering Luke no help at all. Now we know Han does come back to help in the end. So what if he got a few light years away and then realized what he had to do, the righteous thing. To make it to the battle in time to help Luke out they have to go into Hyperspace. Problem is they are now too bulky with all those containers. Han then sacrifices the containers, dumping them like he did Jabba's spice, and jumps to lightspeed to help.

Well thats how I see it. Sometimes I'm so geeky about this stuff I want to kick my own ass. :D

Heh. The way I see it, Alderan was exploded, along with the princess's riches. The Rebellion gave Solo some wookiee chow and sent him on his way. Solo, being rightfully pissed, desides not to help out fer free anymore and lays space tracks. For some reason or another (possably wookiee nagging), leaving the pretty lady and the twerp in emminent danger leaves a bad taste in his mouth, so he turns the bucket around and the rest is history.

Yeah, you got me..

I am suprised why no one questions how I can live so lavishly as a Dancer. Han has certain "needs" that I know how to accomodate. Apparently traveling with a wookiee for so long can leave a smuggler wanting.

Luke: "So you're just leaving then. You're taking your reward and leaving?"

Han : "What good's a reward if ya ain't around to spend it. I got a lot of debts I gotta pay of with this stuff."

Funny scenarios for sure, and some that I think might be on the money. Of course, this is all just for the sake of saying "just for the sake".

Solo definitely got some kind of soft currency valuables that he could sell/ trade for or in place of hard. Whether it came from one the the Organa dynasty's off-orbit accounts or General Dodonna padded the A-Wing production budget who knows, but Solo cashed in like a politician with a tell-all book.

My take is

#1 - that something funny with the money happenned on the way to Jabba. It just fits Solo's. I'm thinking that Solo spied an opportunity to "flip" the reward into an even bigger windfall somewhere and, of course, it fell through. So he's left with working for the Alliance for awhile to float the ship notes and see what happens with this princess chippie.

#2 - and the more solid idea (this one actually gets indirect support from the movie) Solo totally blows Jabba off. He actually feels at home with the Rebellion, it's probably pretty fun for him, and he hopes Jabba will drop it. The movie support comes from Leia's statement "I thought you had decided to stay.", pointing to some decision by Solo that he would make a home with the Alliance. But, "the bounty hunter on Ord Mantell" brought his hustler life right back in his face (think Michael Corleone's "everytime I try to get OUT, they pull me back IN!).

And, Seret if you feel geeky, just think that it wasn't you who started this thread

I have to agree with Keer on this one, and point out that a couple cases of credit chips and supplies aren't going to load down a smuggler frieghter that's designed to take sharp turns and be in combat while it's carrying hidden cargo. And we know that at least a few of the hidden compartments were empty because they were hiding in some of them earlier.

I gotta go with Keer...he was hanging out with the Rebellion because he's like half of you pirates, you pretend to be scoundrels but you're not reallly so bad....plus you like hot chicks in white jumpsuits and lots of weird braided hairstyles. *coughLeia*

Heheh.

Yes, it has to be option #2 all the way.

Dwilah nailed it on the head. :) The Han Solo type scoundrels are not so bad, and they are more than willing to abandon their smuggler-ness for a while to chat it up the ladies. (Or maybe that is part of the package.)

Maybe its cuz its late, but This scenario from Keer makes me think of Usual Suspects for some reason, just in how its put together. Im not going to say which part since i dont want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it and its been ages since Ive seen the movie.

It is very geeky but also very observant, because this is a continuity issue of the films it seems many overlook.
