Happy 30 Year Anniversary to Space Battleship Yamato!! This month, October in 1974 the Grandaddy of anime epic sagas, SBY (released in the USA as Star Blazers) was first relesed in Japanese theatres. It enjoyed a renaissance a few years after Star Wars hit. So many times I almost broke my neck running home from 3rd grade trying to catch this show (uhm before uhh VCR's  )

Relesed in 1974, this show was way ahead of it's time on alot of levels, but particulary in a few familar concepts. A mammoth energy weapon, the Wave Motion Gun, capable of annihlating planets and stars in one shot (Death Star). A device that could rejuvenate dead planets, the Cosmo DNA (Star Trek's Genesis Torpedo) and the later resurrection of a main character via said device (SBY's Captain Avatar/Star Trek's Spock).

As far as the future of anime, the sci-fi epic saga style started with Space Battleship Yamato.

I planned to go to the 30 year anniversary SBY Film Festival in Japan back in February but couldn't swing the time off from work

OMG.. I so remember seeing that as a kid. They used to have all those types of shows on Channel 44 (for those who grew up in the chicagoland area).

What was the name of that gold robot who turned into a rocket? not talking cartoon.. one of those shows where all the characters were gigantic and would fall on skyscrapers, Godzilla style (there is probably a name for this).

Funny. It was Channel 43 in Cleveland, further east along the Great Lakes. I still have their jingle inside my head.

I'm pretty sure you're talking of Ultra Man, Ms. Ekade! This one went by me, but my 2 older brothers are still Ultra Man fans!

Check the slick Japanese website and I can see why, http://www.bandaigames.channel.or.jp/list/ultraman/

Also, heard of Tranzor Z, but can't remember seeing it.

Remind me. I know I've seen it. I keep thinking it was the one where they flew some ship into the head of a giant robot but that could be another show.
