The Y-wing

Slow, heavy, steers like a pig..

I LOVE THIS SHIP!!!!

Why?

Last night I was on Yavin, busting up pirate ambushes. After a particularly rough go, I land to take a break and try out some new components on my ship. At the terminal I run into to Cat Steppenski, old time rebel buddy of mine.

We decided to group and fight together to take a whack at some of the Tier 3 ties in the area. After upgrading my ship, I launch.

*poof* I am in space, looking for my wingman. It turns out, he is in my Y-wing, as a gunner!! We started flipping out. We were expecting to see 2 Y-wings in space.

We flew around, hitting spawns of Ties and Tie Bombers. Having a gunner was awesome. Eventually we decided to swap so we landed.

Now it was my turn to gun.. it was fun as well.

What I learned:
- As the pilot, try to keep your ship steady to help your gunner. You still turn, but just do so in a manner that is smooth and consistently relative to the enemy.
- Gunner: use the brackets "[" and "]" to target components. My favorite is hitting the engines.
- Both: Do not shoot too much. Each of you will drain the capacitor. Only take good shots. As a pilot, I tended to let me gunner do most of the shooting... that's his only job, might as well reward him.
- You share the XP for the kill
- Only the pilot gets the loot.
- It takes a few min to get a feel for eachother. After a couple dogfights, the gunner starts to anticipate the pilot's moves. This element of teamwork is very enjoyable for me.

I was thinking that I would eventually ditch my Y-wing.. but multiplayer ships are incredibly fun.

Any of you rebels, let me know if you want to go up sometime. :D

I was flying a Y-Wing last night, and even though it was suggested to me it was my engine making it so sluggish, I could not stand the damn thing. I ended up pimping out a Z95 and I'm loving that. I'd love to try out the gunner thing, though, if I could catch ya.

Also...Cat. How's he doing? I haven't talked to him in a long time, he's a spiffy guy.

I am getting pretty good at adjusting my throttle to help with the steering issues of the Y-wing.

Cat is doing well. We had a fantastic time last night.. so much so that I looked at the clock and it was 5am before I knew what was going on.

He was funny.. I could tell when he was typing when the ship stopped moving. I kept telling him "Fly, don't type!". Then I started using "Cut the chatter Red 2" and "Stay on target.."

I had to teach him a few Top Gun lines as well.

You think a Y Wing is slow and heavy? I'd like to introduce you to my friend TIE Bomber.

If there was any RP reason in my imagination I would be wanted for several counts of attempted abduction of a Twi'lek (even though we've never formally met). I wanna try one of these ships so badly it hurts, but alas - the stinkin' ships we used to escape the hutt's place didn't have turrents.

I'm also kind of curious too if a freelancer can run gunner on-board a faction ship. Can anyone spell mercenary with me?

I'll just have to flybyya sometime and watch it in action. Sounds like a blast.

Heh.

Your pointers sound a lot like the pointers I'd get from my tail-gunners who wanted to ride in my Stukas in WWIIOnline.

To which I'd say "I'll fly straight and level when you can shoot them off my tail faster than they can shoot me." ;)

But seriously, all good points.

Some of my favorite moments were from flying with tail gunners. I used to enjoy flying inbetween trees and under bridges when my tailgunner would ask me to "fly low so we're not seen." I imagine you'd get a similar thrill from the asteroid fields, no?

Another thing I like about the Y-wing is the mass. Currently I am only using about 22k of the available 140k of available mass. Right now my biggest limitation is energy.

The "longprobe" variant has even more mass (180k), linked weapons, but no seat for a gunner.

I am about 250k xp from the X-wing.. /drool (add another 200k xp for the next level componets as well)

My question is why didn't Ekade's gunner appear in his own ship? Did he have one? Or is there a selection to be made in case you don't want to ride as gunner, but in your own ship separately?

From what I've read, only players of the ship's faction (Y-Wing = Rebel) can pilot or sit gunner for the ship. For us Privateers, it'll have to be more motivation to get to Master Pilot and the YT-1300 that waits there for the gunner experience.

My gunner and I were grouped. When I launched, he got "sucked up" with me. Very similar to bringing your pals along for a Yacht cruise.

I am thinking we would have to be un-grouped to launch in our own individual ships. In that case, each pilot would Launch his ship like usual.

So then would you have to forfeit the group xp bonus to ride in a separate Y-Wing?

I hope not for the sake missions that would benefit from 2 separate ships and players that want the bonus. There really should be a way to group in-space if there isn't one already and we just don't know it.

Yes, or I could just launch a non-multiperson ship like the Y-wing longprobe.

I have no idea what happens if I am grouped with 3 people.. who gets "sucked up"?

Another idea is to group on the ground and have the person with the muli-person ship launch last. *shrugs*

I just scoured the Game Guidebook, but it reveals nothing on either the multiperson ship or character group placement questions.

I've done a /invite <name> while in space. I got rejected, but what's new for a dog-lookin' bothan like myself. :)

Has anyone tried that to form or join a group in-flight?
