Melee Academy?

I would like to start a monthly or bimonthly event that melee characters can bring their fighting style to and train with others (ie 1 on 1 duels up to 8 on 8 team battle practice). personally I love pvp but hate watching full composite 3k+ ham fighters run around flaming those they kill (even when its 10 on 1!).
Along time ago before the nerf of melee templates, people would line up to duel the powerful melee characters, and in these duels it was uncool to heal, be buffed, or wear armor. In fact it seemed that even the non roleplayers respected these rules, but now.../sigh everyone is always buffed or have a ham of 400/400/1000 rendering them useless unbuffed. Maybe a time and place for duels (or martial art academy) would allow for the warriors that dont use acklay stun batons or powerhammers, to become know for their skills in a weapon not normally seen. Furthermore I think this could provide a great roleplay atmosphere old warriors and young "hot shot" fighters to collide for some goo rivalries

I think this is a great idea, I would love to see it put into effect even though my character isn't a melee profession character. I think several other people on this board would be interested in this (*coughfightnightcough*) and hopefully will jump on this to help you make this a reality.

I won't bother saying how much I hate PvP because everyone here is probably sick of hearing it but I LIKE this idea and I would probably participate.

Mainly because I worked my template into an RP background. The style is called "The Divine Blade" and mastery of it involves strict knowledge of all melee combat (Master Brawler), mastery of both one-handed and two-handed weapons (Master Swordsman/Master Fencer) and combining all that with meditative techniques to harness inner energy from the force (TK 4/0/0/0) but not to the extent of a Jedi. Seret learned this technique from the Singing Mountain Clan but I cannot say how or why just yet.

So if we're talking unbuffed action action all in good fun and RP then I'll all for it. Sign me up.

I would be so into this. Even though 44% of my skill points are non-combat, I would love this.

Ekade has been a serious student of melee techniques most of her career. She considers it to be very similar to dance.

I could not agree more about being tired of the buffed, composite wearing goons.

I think we are on the same page here, but keep the mindset of those who consider combat to be an art. Structure the rules so that the skill of the combatants is the biggest factor in the outcome, not who can spam a particular special the most.

A nicely decorated temple or academy would be a great venue for this. It would be cool if people arrived in appropriate clothing. Anything from flowing robes, to something more exotic. I envision an enviroment of serenity, where people discuss technique and offer helpful suggestions.

Perhaps even have Masters of a given Art. Allow people to make up their own. This would be an RP thing first, template thing second.

I am starting to ramble... But I LOVE this idea. Make it happen, I am more than willing to help.

Interesting idea. Would be interesting to watch as well, considering I despise melee and won't touch it with a 50ft pole.

As for the ham, I've had my ham 400, 400, 1100 since BEFORE everyone decided to go full comp and full armor. It was necissary for my rifleman/squad leader abilities. And I STILL don't bother with buffs. :P

I think a nice Temple or structure would be a good place, but also I have always scouted for iteresting terrain on many planets for this sort of thing, also spamming is not pretty I agree Ekade, in fact Dariis and his stundents are known to use the cooler animations verses the more damaging moves.

An idea I have to vary attacks is in a duel you cant use the same attack twice in a row...(or if thats dumb maybe something similar). or one thing I wave used for my Monks is limiting the number of special attacks in the duel to 8 (or some number) to train myself and others to use the right attack at the right time.

I think once there are 8 people commited to try this out we can start, sounds like we have 4 already and I know Joeash would be 5 (he is a Monk too). I would like to put this into motion in about 2 weeks (so it can be properly organized), But I have no idea when a good time/day would be (this will be my first event) so I could use some advice on that

Player buildings are nice in that you can decorate them to your liking..

Possible "NPC" venues:
- Masassi temple - Yavin (though a bit dark)
- Jedi ruins - Dantooine
- Theed palace (nice big rooms there and unique decor.. not sure if it fits the RP concept though)
- beaches of Theed (Kaadara, right?)
- many of the NPC cities have gardens they might be nice.

The ideal time of day is always tricky... There is no one time where EVERYONE can be on. Personally, 9pm CST is ideal on most days. The kids are asleep by then.. usually.

As far as the rules.. sometimes a dictatorship is better then a democracy. You being the master should make the call. /bow2

What are your thoughts on food, clothing, and the use of other stat enhancing items?

I think no food or spice, but if you robe has skill mods they are ok (after all it is your outfit) as far as armor goes, I think one item (excluding leg/chest/helm) would be ok, personally I like the look of many boots/gloves and bracers. Also I feel dizzy to knockdown should not be allowed, but dizzy to posture change should be allowed (example 2 best pike moves are area2 and hit3, but area2 dizzies, and hit3 lowers posture. same for heavysword, hit3 dizzies and area3 lowers posture)

But if people want dizzy to knockdown im ok with it too because Dariis has 90 defense vs knockdown and 85 defense vs dizzy.

Sounds like a great idea man to bad I'm not a melee fighter. What cities would u use as back drops? Player cities, game cities, or maybee a POI?

My schedule is always cruddy, but if I can make it.. I'd love to do some 'real' PvP. Glacial's been practicing Noghri polarm/unarmed techniques for a long time, but after being off-world for so long he wonders if he still knows how to use them. I'll leave the poisoned polarms at home (or at least in my weapons rack), even if that is a tradition of my art.

I hope you can get this going at a time when many people can show. After working out the kinds, this would be a great idea for the larger community and maybe some Developer/Event Staff involvement one time. I think many people would enjoy this.

I love the POI / NPC area potential for screenshots.
