NO, SWG CHARACTERS DO NOT COUNT...
I'm talking about games with in depth characters that aren't made by the players...
And the idea for this thread popped in my head while I was posting about my favorite super heros...
They don't have to be main characters, but most of mine are, and I couldn't make a simple list like 5 or 10, so whatever you feel is sufficient...
8 - Auron (FF 10 - PS2)
7 - Albel The Wicked (Star Ocean: Till the End of Time - PS2)
6 - Dante (Devil May Cry series - PS2)
5 - Cloud (FF7 - PS1)
4 - Squall (FF8 - PS1)
3 - Snake Pliskin (Any MGS game)
2 - Joshua (Shadowrun - Genesis)
1 - Dart (The Legend of Dragoon - PS1)
Please say the name of the game and system they were/are on (as I have) so I can check them out if I haven't already...

Uh, Typhus?
Snake Plisskin (two s's) is the character from Escape from New York and Escape from L.A., the movies.
Solid Snake is the character from Metal Gear Solid.
Just thought I'd help straighten that out.

It was a gag. The makers love to make jokes in their games. I just got MGS3 and before the game starts it asks what MSG game you liked the most. If you answer MSG2 your Radien in the opening cut seen. Your air droped behind the Soviet boarder and after you hit the ground the general who is in charge of the mission tells you that you can take the mask off and its Snake. I must have busted a gut for about 10 minutes off that. It was so unexpected.
As for my fav video game characters, I'd have to go with:
Sam Fisher-Splinter Cell (X-Box)
Solid Snake-MGS (PS2)
Kyle Katran-Jedi Knight (X-Box)

Haven't played 2, but I have a feeling that was a joke. Or at least I hope it's a joke.

Typhus is correct, after you meet Snake as Raiden in MSG 2 he calls himself Plisken, but its not really his name just a fake one for that moment in the game. In truth he has no name, only a code name.
Being such a huge fan of MGS (even the 2nd one, though Raiden was a bad character) I put Snake at the top of my list.
And thats it, no list. Plenty get honorable mention like Samus, Chris Redfield, Terry Bogard, Iori and a few more but I can't honestly make a list ranking them. I'm a hardcore gamer through and through and they all occupy the same place in my heart at the end of the day. Sappy but true.

The Peasent from Peasant's Quest!!
Seriously I don't play those games enough to have a favorite, but I suppose if there was one it wold be Lara Croft, just on principle of a tough, intellegent female who knows who to take care of herself..just to kind of off handedly admire *shrugs* Though I don't play Tomb Raider, its just the character concept that I like.
