But I was just wondering if anyone had considered playing World of Warcraft. Lots of folks are going from what I understand and they DO have policed roleplaying servers.

The subject isn't taboo here, but surely not one of the more popular notions  For various reasons, most forum regulars here will not be playing Worlds of Warcraft.

One of the reasons may have been a perceived lack of support to the Role Play audience. Some equate the WoW audience with a mindset that resembles the powergamers of SWG and other games. To me, from the beginning, it seemed that WoW would have as much of it's share of "Uber Goobers" as any other game. Despite that, Blizzard still didn't take the RP part of it's audience for granted. They started *serious* development talks going back to last year regarding RP support with teeth. This vision culminated in the Role Play servers and rules outlined in the link above.

Personally, I've never made a secret of my appreciation for *their* appreciation. In my real life job, customer appreciation is a concept you survive with or go out of business lacking. Sony has trouble boogieing with me to this music.

It's just damned refreshing to see a company break a sweat in matters like this. Blizz could have discounted Role Players and still made crazy dollars, but they didn't. Conscious efforts like this make you want to at least meet them halfway. Blizzard deserves a shot at my money and I'll be giving it to them. I know that I damned sure work hard enough for it and the leisure time that I enjoy is never guaranteed. I may love WoW, I may hate it, but they've *earned* a shot.

This is not to say that I'll be disappearing from the scene here. It's Role Play spirit of the kind that started this site that's being respected and accomodated by the folks at Blizzard. Maybe Blizzard's commitment will motivate Sony to at least try to accomodate more "RP" in their MMORPG...after they get Continuity, Combat, and all of the Professions on track.

If I'm going to another fantasy game...its going to be Middle Earth Online. WoW is a fad...just like everyother new hyped up MMORPG. DAoC had policed RP servers also...and look where it went.

I beta tested this game and i have to say, it's amazing. Simply amazing. The world looks great. Yes, the chars may look a bit cartoonish, but the scenery is great. I never once felt like i was grinding. And the map, its huge, each place is uniqe. And Keer, if you try WoW, what race are you going to be?

I've heard a lot of people talk about WoW. I had a chance to get in the Open Beta, but I didn't. I know a bunch of people who did and from what they have to say, it blows SWG away. It's larger, more involved, more content, better everything. Everyone was excited about it because they know that Blizzard does their games right. With that being said, I'm not going to go to WoW.

Like Novall said, when you get right down to it, WoW is just another fantasy MMO. I'm not too involved in the Warcraft Storyline (I have WC3 and FT, but I never got into the earlier ones). Storyline, for me, accounts for 75% of the MMO. All fantasy MMO stories sort of mesh together. I mean, ask yourself, just how different will the storylines surrounding MiddleEarth Online and WoW be?

SWG was different for me. SWG is my first MMO and more than likely it will be my last. The only reason I got involved with it was because it was Star Wars, which I believe is quite possibly the greatest trilogy of all time (Ewoks v Andy Garcia? I take the Ewoks). The reason I give Star Trek fans grief over being nerds is because EVERYONE knows the Star Wars stories. To this day, I don't think my mother has even seen an entire Star Wars movie, but she can tell you who Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker are.

Now, WoW may be a better game on a purely gaming basis. I'm still undecided on whether or not "policed" roleplay servers are a good thing. SWG has a lot of problems, but everytime I get ready to quit, some RPer (usually german) comes along and changes my mind. It has a lot of flaws, but it has more potential than WoW ever will.

I tested also and I agree. One of the most frequently heard praises was that you don't feel like your are grinding.

My main desire is to play an Undead in that game. Think all the Feign Deaths as a Smuggler would help me get into character? Look for "Praow" as my character's name, Oeree. Praow Funad-Suul (Profound Soul) :D .

I may also go for a melee class. Feeling Dwarvish with that. Look for Hurik.

We'll see.

There is a part of this that pulls at me, but not enough to make me go there. Having a policed RP server is one thing, having a strong RP community in place is another.

I do not buy into the fact that Blizzard is infallable. I cite the difference in "coolness" between Diablo and Diablo2 as my reason for this. Diablo was an incredible gaming experience.. Diablo 2 was just lame. Good friends tell me Warcraft 3 was not nearly as fun as Starcraft or Warcraft2. To me, this indicated the golden age of the company has passed. I could be wrong but the trend would indicate otherwise.

I think I will wait a good 6 months, then ask the people that are still playing WoW if they like it.

Uh oh, Keer has tasted the forbidden fruit. No not Zannon, the other one. :)

Though I don't want you folks to feel any topics regarding other MMORPGs are taboo here. Feel free to praise them, hate them, marry them and have their children if you like. As long as you're not offensive its all good in Jibber Jabber.

Nah, I didn't have to taste The Apple to learn there was "shame" in Sony's game. I hear you though, S-man. It's all good with me too.

All I'm saying is that if customer service is a *fad* too, then I guess I'm a sap for that. They sure got my number there. I'll take that abuse every day...and twice on Sunday. STILL feels better than what I've been used to.

And until Sony can show me that their alternative is better....

..weeee'll see.

Surely not saying *any* company is infallible. But if Blizzard's "golden age" has passed, at least they had one!

Despite some recent *indications* Sony's still down at the alchemist's shop trying to pass off their Copper Age.

This is one of those games where I am not sure if it would be more fun to play on an RP server, or a PVP server.

I will probably be playing on multiple servers just to keep up with all the different groups of people I've met on Gorath. I'm feelin the Night Elves too, but I also played an Undead for a bit and those are just NEATO. Is Aerulai a good night elf name? ^_^

Sadly, I wasnt able to pick the game up today (played X-box with Zo all day), and tomorrow I'm going out of town so I'll be bored out of my mind until Monday. And...now that you guys know everything going on with my week, I'm sure you'll sleep easier now /sarcasm off

I appreciate you all posting your opinions, Zo has been kind of anti-WoW and I needed to know that I'm not the only one that is excited about it. Also helps to know he isnt being a totally biased prick too. (<3 Alonzo, pwn ur face)

Whats funny is that everyone "Oohh'd and Ahhh'd" about games such as UO, EQ, SWG<, Shadowbane, DAoC ect ect...then about 2 months after release it was bitch fest.

The thing is that NO MMORPG is going to be perfect. Its impossiable. Their's nice little bits and pieces to any game that make it appeal to others, but in the end it still turns out to be riddled with bugs somewhere, or unbalanced, or bad customer service...whatever.

And I dont mean to sound harsh when I say this, but leaving SWG only frees up more for me to do now ingame without having to worry about 10000000 people being there. So really its doing me a favor for people to leave.

It kinda reminds me of the big exedous we had in UO a couple times over the years...I stayed through 2 almost complete wipe-outs of our RP community, and it did nothing but make me a better player and more sought after. I did it there, hell I can do it here easily.

Novall's comments remind me of one of the (many) times I was trying to cheer Grendel up on the SOE Gorath forums..

My comment was this.. As more people leave, I find those that remain are more and more like me. It seems I encounter more and more of my kind of gamer.

I am a big advocate of compression. I often bash player cities. I want people to give up their ghost towns and move into existing, living cities.

Kirt brings up an excellent point as well. With all the campers leaving the game.. might I actually have a chance at some of this "uber" stuff? :D
