More Continuity Problems...

It seems to me there are a lot of continuity problems in Star Wars based games and not just in "games vs canon" but even "games vs games" (each other). This review assumes you are already familiar with FS quests in SWG. So here goes.

The game I am comparing to for my continuity comparison is Star Wars Galaxies for PC by SOE vs Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back for Atari 2600 by Parker Brothers. I have major concerns about the apparent continuity issues in this game.

I have included a screen shot for visual reference:

This game simulates the climactic battle of the Rebel alliance buying time for their escape from Hoth as the Empire mounts an invasion effort. Many manned fighters were put in battle against the Imperial AT-ATs, while strangely enough no TIE squadrons showed up.

The game starts at the beginning of the invasion where an infinite amount of ATAT's are lined up single file against one Rebel pilot. The excitment one feels at this initial engagement is beyond explanation. After breaking a cold sweat destroying several ATATs something happens. The Star Wars theme music queues up. And not just queue up like any old toon, I could tell this was big time. It queued up in a way that would make even John Williams himself cry. So I ask myself, holy shit what does this mean?!?

I quickly look in my manual to discover the horrifying truth: I am force sensitive. The misery is overwhelming. Like this game and SWG it means I am temporarily invincible, so I continue to kill as much as possible. I camp out every iceberg on every Hoth mountain top waiting to greif the next ATAT in the line. Then I realize the big difference, I didn't get any badges yet. Hell I haven't even gone to the damn village yet. What is this? Some conspiracy? How can I be allowed to be invincible? What about the ATAT pilots, can they be force sensitive?

I don't know what to say, really. Not even the games are coherent with each other. I really think Parker Brothers and Sony should get together and work this thing out. I have already contacted Parker Brothers to see if a patch was available and alas they have not updated since '82. I am beginning to realize that I may just have to live with this eroneous copy of my game.

If you have other examples you would like to add, please do. I don't want to invest in another Star Wars game for my 2600 until I know I am going to be happy with it.

Excellent review Jabe. You really hit the nail on the head. How could the Empire Strikes Back game of such grand proportions be so carelessly overlooked?

But I have a much more shocking continuity problem on my mind...

Star Wars Galaxies Shipwright VS. LEGOtm Builder

After taking on the role of a Master Shipwright I truely understand the work and care that goes into shipbuilding. I see the care for detailed stats, the precision in constructing parts within mass contraints and the sheer amount of resources that go into making one single ship. This all pales in comparison to the fine parts I must craft to run my ship.

But then I see the LEGOtm Millenium Falcon, a modified YT-1300 ship.

Image

Total parts for the LEGOtm Falcon? Just over 4500!

What treachery is this? How can I build a YT-1300 with a mere 4500 parts while a fully functional one in-game with parts and all (and no modifications to the chassis mind you) takes less than 15 total parts? What kind of massive YT-1300 is this?

Are the Devs holding out on us? I thought I was making fine ships with a variety of special parts but then I see this multi-color block monstrosity put my ships to shame!

So I'll take the LEGOtm YT thank you very much. You can keep your puny 15 part ship.

The good thing about the Lego YT is that decayed blocks are easier to replace then SWG YT components. I've got WP's to all the local block dealers.

Screw the YT...I want that badass snowtrooper in the background with the portable cannon he is holding.
