Longevity of SWG...

I am curious if anyone here is familiar with the life cycle of an MMORPG. How long do they go for? Have any big MMORPGs been retired? And what are the opinion's of SWG's future (time-waise) in the big picture? How many years will it run? Will updates just continue perpetually for years or decades? Or will they at some point start it over when way better technology comes out?
Just curious.

I hope it lasts a long time. I want SWG to succeed because it represents my only chance to RP in a the SW universe. As such, I try to do what I can as a player to make the game fun for as many people as possible. Some say this is the Dev's job.. but I don't care. If SWG dies, so do my dreams of being able to play star wars.

Based on other MMORPGs and online games in general they never really die. Games like Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot and Lineage II are still going strong. I don't know if Everquest was shutdown by the release of Everquest II but I doubt. Even online games like Battlefield 1942, Planetside, and WWII Online still go on and on and on. Expect this one to do the same.
As long as people have subscriptions the MMORPGs live on.

Despite the end result, one of the shrewdest moves that could have been made by any company was to brand Star Wars into a MMORPG.
Going on 3 generations now, the pop culture strength of Star Wars alone will give SWG marathon legs.

Ultima Online is working on its 8th year since August. Its my firm belief that UO will be the begining and end of MMORPGs. When that games starts to be shut down, there will have been a new advent in online gaming.

Too true. This could be the greatest MMO out there if a few simple things were done in the inital release and not later in publish's.
1. The Village - Makes the time fram from noob to jedi padawan take a long time.
2. More Profession revamps and less time making silly holes in the ground.
3. Different armor protects better against differnt damage types IE. Composite is great against Energy and Kinetic But weak against Heat given that fact that you would burn up in a tin can like that.
4. A set Maxium Resistance on armor, if this was done and armor no matter what you used except special drop Armor layers, could only reach say 45-50% and 60-65% on the special armor layers, Many things would be different.
5. If specials actually worked
But thats What I think could have made this the Greatest MMO out there, but for now we have this :/
Ultima Online is still going strong

Ultima Online....
I started that game when I was... 13?
Now I'm 21.
As far as I know... It's the longest running MMORPG currently. As it was released 2 years before EQ.
They released expansion after expansion and I don't think you have to worry about this game ever stopping. At least not until the rest of this planet does. *knocks on wood*
I just checked the site and they recently released a ninja expansion pack?
Messed up.
This game is 2 dimensional with an ABOVE view.
Ok ok... they released a 3d expansion.
But I thought this game would of died a year or two ago.
btw Seret. Did you ever play WWII online?
I gave it a shot for about 5 months I think
