For me it has too many things going for it.
- Based on a great graphic novel
- Writer/Creator Frank Miller was there for the filming every step of the way
- Great Director
- Great Cast
- Great look and feel to the film, exactly like the comic
- Finally a new Film Noir on the big screen
So, Enjoy.... I hope
Sin City Trailer
Never heard of Sin City...was that one of Miller's big hits and I am just ignorant or was that a lesser known one?
Ignorance aside, the movie looks pretty damn cool. The cast is oddly interesting, too...Mickey Rourke, Brittany Murphy, Elijah Wood and a blonde haired Jessica Alba? Worth a shot I suppose...

Sin City rocks big time
the movie looks like it's going to be good, especially since it looks like it's filmed just like the book was drawn...
the scene with Marv in the rain reminds me exactly of the page it was taken from, and I haven't read/seen it in forever
delt if you haven't ever read sin city, go to any bookstore and they'll have em there in the graphic novel section...there are several ones, all are good, and adult material for your young eyes....
I still have my Sin City shirt with the outline of the cowgirl stripper on it

It looks awesome. Was this some sort of adaptation from a comic or something?

Skarr, if its not PG-13 or less, I can't buy it. Plus if my mom finds out, she will cancel my account. And I can't afford to just pay for game cards all the time. LOL!!!
Joking aside, does anyone in the Western Chicago Suburban area have any copies of it that I might borrow? I am a bit of a cheap ass and what do I do with it if I buy it and hate it?

Sorry, I'm such a big comic geek that I thought everyone might of heard of Sin City.
Its probably Frank Miller's biggest accomplishment next to Dark Knight Returns. Its a fanastically unique comic done mostly in black and while with splotches of color and its emulates the classic film noir style of story. Its quite dark and gruesome at times and definately not for kids. Take a look at some Sin City artwork and you'll see just how much the film imitates it brilliantly. I just have high hopes this will be a film I will greatly enjoy.

Annnnd this one of the things I regret about dropping comics for most of the 1990's. Looks like I have some back reading to do.
Good to see Mickey Rourke in the mix again. Film noir is perfect for him and vice versa.

Yeah, Dark Knight Returns is Frank Miller's best. Sin City is good, though. I personally am not a fan of bringing comic books to movies and this is no different. Although I have to say certain things took me back to the book (the cowboy stripper), certain things make me think the book was better and look bad on film (the little asian chick jumping in to save "what's his face" in the alley).
When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was going to be like World's Greatest or Batman: Dead End, but it looks like they're really doing it.

I hate it (I know, please, everyone, just feign your shock and dismay). Allow me to explain.
Sin City is by far my favorite series that Miller worked on. He took Noir and brought it to comics. I was so into that look that I based my entire Senior year drawing thesis on that negative/positive space style. It was a lot of fun.
The films look NOTHING like the comics to me. The fact that there's even grayscale values in the shots makes me cringe. The CG backgrounds are absolutely sub-par, for even the "B" level of the movie industry. I'd expect better visuals coming from Xena. I'm not exaggerating.
Marv looks nothing like Marv to me. He looks like this guy. The prosthetic chin just makes him look like a children's show villain. It's a joke.
The use of color disturbs me greatly. It works well in the comics, but it completely distracts from the film. I think if they just kept the iconic look for the lady in the red dress, or that yellow bastard, that might work, but when they flash full color on Jessica Alba or when the lady in the red dress's eyes glow green (different trailer, not seen in this one), it just completely breaks the illusion for me.
It's also pretty BAD film noir. Watch Touch of Evil (Orson Wells). It's actually more Sin City than this is (at least to me).
Also, every film Miller touches reeks. His name's on the list as co-director. BE AFRAID.
Things I'm excited about:
Hartigan being played by Bruce Willis. Not who I pictured in the role (he's not nearly old enough to be Hartigan), but I love Willis. And I love Hartigan.
Seeing how these stories play out on the big screen. Like I said, Sin City is my favorite body of Miller work, followed closely by his work on Daredevil (of course, DKR is my favorite piece overall from him). I like how the actor is playing Marv. He doesn't look like Marv to me, but he ACTS like Marv, which is awesome.
The fact that this trailer looks 800 times better than the previous trailer.
Maybe the fact that I don't have high hopes for this movie will allow me to have a good time at it instead of having it fall beneath my enjoyment threshold.
At any rate, sorry to rain on yet another parade here.
Carry on.

Keer, Sin City is easily one of the greatest things that happened to comics in the 90's. Just pick up every anthology/collection you can find on it. It's worth every penny. The later stuff (like Family Values) isn't all that hot, but you MUST grab That Yellow Bastard, along with the first Sin City, and even Dwight's story (I forget what his was called, something about like Big Hard Kill or something like that).Keer wrote:Annnnd this one of the things I regret about dropping comics for most of the 1990's. If I can ever find it, I'll try and digitize the pencil-test I had going of the Silent Night one-shot Miller did for Xmas around '95 or so. I started animating it about 6 years ago and never finished it. Yet another project that was abandoned.

Ahhh, Touch of Evil. Damn good goodness that. Ranks only second to me for noir to Kiss of Death with Victor Mature and Richard Widmark.X'an Shin wrote:

Before I compare Sin City to that I'm going to give it a shot on the big theatre screen. I don't trust my computer and the trailer to fully bring it home.
I'm really looking forward to reading as much of these works as possible. All I needed was an excuse to blow the dough. In a way it brings me back to my graphic novel roots. Before Marvel's colors stole me and my kiddie allowance away, I lived off of my older brothers' black & white "mature" books (Conan Saga, Heavy Metal, and a really obscure title called "Swashbucklers" from about 1981).X'an Shin wrote: Keer, Sin City is easily one of the greatest things that happened to comics in the 90's.
