They cite SOE and specifically use galaxies as an example, however the article would lead one to believe SOE has got griefing down to a minimum. I don't know how true that is compared to other games.

Good article, but I commend Galaxies for still allowing PvP, and other possible means for griefing to occur. The only reason City of Heros doesn't have griefing is because it is such an elementary game; you'll get sick of playing it after 2 months max.

I've got friends who swear by it, and have been playing since launch.

The fact that it's just a go in and beat-em-up is what actually draws people to it (besides the capes and heroes). It gets rid of the minutia and micromanagement and just lets you shove a fist through a bad-guy's face.

It's brilliant design if you ask me.

I guess it all depends on how basic you like your games. I like something a little more in depth than running around and hitting numbers corresponding to superhero powers. Its not suprising its popular, people DID like Counterstrike afterall.

But let's not point the dirty end of the stick at Counterstrike either. Depending on the server you played it could be a very mature and fair game. Props to the ruthless Admins of the Asylum server. They usually had one Admin on at all times. Griefers and obvious hack/bot users didn't last more than two maps.

I think it's a good type of simplicity that's going very strong after 7 years. The "Scout Knives" map is one of my favorites. The only weapons you have are bolt action Scout Rifles with scopes and a combat dagger. You're also playing in "moon gravity" near weightlessness which adds another element of fun and skill. Basically the main fun for me is offing one of my real life friends in some silly way.

Then there's the fun of just not knowing who's behind the next corner. Remisicient of the sniper sequences in Full Metal Jacket.

I don't play Counterstrike as much as I used to, but if you see a guy named Blackhawk Clown on a map, it's a good chance that's me. I'm so rusty now I'll be an easy target.

Why not just play Whack-a-mole for 10+ hours a week? :D
