Drugs and SWG?

I want to open a dialog on people's thoughts on drugs (usually referred to as spice in game) and SWG. I am not talking about muon gold or that, I am talking about role playing a chemical addiction or being a "spice fiend" in character.

Does it have a place in the RP community or is this gnerally frowned upon? The only experience I have had with spice in RP is some folks mixing spice in to their drinks at an S&V waay back. This is something I would like to explore more but I am really not sure how people will respond. Do you as roel players feels that drugs have a place in our society like in real life? Should musicians and entertainers be more prone to participating in this aspect like in RL?

I have a lot of ideas for adding this to our culture. But I am also concerned about this turning in to a license for people to act stupid in character. Along with other unforseen complications, I am just looking for your thoughts.

I think if its done right, with drama and not slapstick, it would be a very interesting element added to RP. You are right though, it is an open invitation for people to show up at an RP event, act like a complete idiot and disrupt everyone, and then show up the next time and use spice as your excuse.

In that respect I think any compulsion, whether it be spice or even killing, can be RP'd right by a good roleplayer. I'd like to find Mess'tar huddled in the corner of the casino half-naked spitting out nonsense because someone slipped him tainted spice or a recovering spice addict with twiches and an other psycholoical problems.

Do it right and your golden, do it wrong and you get ignored and eventually banned from cantinas and cities.

If it's not in the movies, it's not in the SW Universe, I feel.

I can respect that but spice WAS mentioned in the movie. Wasn't it mentioned that the cargo of Jabba's that Han dumped in order to avoid Imperial capture was spice? Maybe it was mentioned somewhere else and I'm just thinking it was in the movie. If it was then what could spice be? I don't know about you but when I think of spice I think of Dune and what effects the spice had in the books.

Anything you want to try out to expand the immersion you have in the game should at least be attempted. if it doesn't work it can be written off. I'd like to feel like I am in the bad part of town once in a while ingame. Again it can be done completely wrong.

Remember that anyone whose character would object to such things may stop interacting with you. Maybe thats not an all together bad thing sometimes either =). I think it would be a good social experiment for the rp world.

That's when some Imperial Stormtroopers, seeing someone wacked out on spice (or on a downer), throw them in lockup. Maybe charged a fine with the option to become a mark and not have to pay the fine ( until they are caught ).

As far as it being in the movies

There is Kessel

Not to mention that the spice ryll dominates Twi'lek culture.

I guess that explains the lack of bathrooms. But where does all the sex come from then?

That link was very informative. Spice/drugs appear to indeed be a part of the Star Wars culture. I am just uncertain how it should be exploited in role playing.

It is in the movies...best example is the guy that tries to peddle "Death Sticks" to Obi-Wan in Ep2. "Death Sticks" are a form of spice.

I also want to say there is a reference in EP4, but where it is, escapes me right now.

Ewoks smoke. Who knows what all they have in the wilds of Endor...but I mean, they're Ewoks. They're crazy enough to attack AT-STs.

As far as I'm concerned, "Death Sticks" are cigarettes, not spice. I can't craft them as a Master Smuggler, so they're not spice to me.

Also, here's what I got from doing a "find" through the scripts for the 3 main movies:

1). 3PO mentions the spice mines of Kessel when they're on the blockade runner.
2). Luke says his father didn't fight in the clone wars. That he was a navigator ona spice freighter.
3). In the Special Edition remake with Jabba in it, Jabba mentions that Han dropped a shipment of spice.

However, it should be noted that Jabba's mention isn't in the ORIGINAL movie, and there's no mention of people actually TAKING spice. At all.

There's no mention of spice in Empire or Jedi.

So, the movies allude to spice, but never actually show it or use it.

And as a master droid engineer I cannot craft any type of battle droid, so they're not real droids to me. From now on I'll consider them puppies (that shoot lasers). The droidekas are only tumbleweeds.

Almost a good dig. But your attempt at ironic humor falls short of the mark.

The difference here is that the guy was smoking the Death Stick right at the bar. No seedy back-door lounge, no hidden drug den. No, he just lit right up and offered some to Obi-Wan.

The scene was someone obviously smoking in a bar. Now, would you consider a cigarette a legal or illegal drug? Is it something that should be smuggled? Is it illegal? No, it's not.

Now, should you be able to build battle droids? I think no one will argue that you shouldn't. The fact that I can craft every spice in the SW universe and you can't craft every droid is a flaw on the part of the game developers, not my argument.

My argument still stands that you don't see anyone taking drugs in the movies, so you shouldn't see them taking drugs in the game. Smuggle them, yes. Take them? Probably not.

I will go so far as to say that if done properly, a spice fiend could be a compelling character. But I doubt many people could pull it off and still make you care for that character.
