How is this for a present?
I got into an accident yesterday (january 3rd) with a woman and we decided that we would not call the police and report it. She had an SUV, rear ended my dinky mazda. I got the kinked bumper and paint marring, she got nada. She was all upset and apologetic, I was uncharacteristically kind and understanding. I was standing in a mud pit, with a damaged vehicle and getting angry would solve nothing. She said thank you for not flipping out, because she knew people have a tendency to do that. Whatever. She was at fault and knew it and knew she would be recieving a ticket and an insurance claim if we did report it, so we decided that I would inspect the damage further when I got home, and call her with what I had decided I wanted to do after the fact. Call it a gentlemen's agreement. Ok, all is well. I get home, check it out, and because it is a plastic fender with a kink in it, it is gonna need to be replaced. So I call her that the only damage from the accident is what she and I BOTH saw at the accident and tell her that I am getting an estimate the next day (today, my birthday...great timing). OK, still no problems...she thanks me for being so understanding.
Get the estimate....any guesses on what it costs to replace a fender? Anyone who has had body work knows that it can cost between 600 and 900ish dollars....obviously this woman had never had auto body work done. I told her I was quoted at 704 and I asked her how she would like to handlel the whole situation...
To which I was told...
Wow...I don't have that money to just GIVE you...and you and I both know that you aren't gonna use that money for a fender so...I guess I will be calling my insurance...(In the snottiest tone you ever heard)
I was absolutely dumbstruck...I did her a favor in two ways...
A. Avoiding an instant 75 dollar moving violation for failing to yield to avoid an accident, maybe two if the cop was feeling saucy. Failure to stop at a stop sign (she rear ended me as I was accelerating from a stop) being the other.
B. Not instantly filing a claim through HER policy (We are both with state farm so things will work out nicely for me) and jacking up her rates for the next few terms. What does it take for your rates to go up these days? A stiff breeze?
After her first assinine comment, she continued to berate me by telling me that, "It must have been my lucky day, because now I get a new fender on her." There were a few gouges on it that went through the clear coat from BEFORE the accident...here is the kicker...the gouges are black, the car is deep blue. YOU CAN'T SEE EM SO I DIDN'T CARE. But instantly, that was my reasoning for gouging her out of 704 dollars. Even better, was that I was willing to negotiate with her on how much she would pay me, cuz i figured she wouldn't foot the total. But somehow, I had a change of heart...I wonder what did it?
I was nothing, if not respectful and patient with this woman...I tried to do someone a favor and took a chance on human decency, and it blew up on me. Last time I do that. My agent tells me that the worst case scenario is that I have to pay my $250 deductable when the car gets fixed IF I get the repairs done before the claim on her insurance goes through. That would be reimbursed to me out of her policy as well.
I would have been perfectly happy waiting to get it repaired, but now I have changed my mind. I am getting it fixed tomorrow, paying the 250 and making her policy spend 954 dollars instead of 704. Congratulations Susan Byrne, that is what being a bitch gets you.
Keep in mind, this woman is at least 15 years my senior. It's funny, that I am 23 years old (as of today), and I know more about human decency than this woman (who works at Central Dupage Hospital). Gah.
