Do I suck?

So I kinda hate myself right now...

One of the salespeople here at the office where I work might be getting fired...essentially because I exist. She was hired to alleviate the pressure on the other sales person while I was away at school. Now that I am back and we are in the middle of an off season, the budget might be too strained to keep both her and I on.

How do I know I am not gonna get the can? Because I work for my father. This blows. I feel like a total prick because she might be losing her job because of me. Granted she has been here less than 1 year, and I have been working here seasonally since 1998 (prorated, I still have more than 2 years here), but still...she actually earned the job here...even though I am qualified to do it, I didn't have to work for it at all.

Needless to say, I have spent the majority of the morning avoiding her. Which is tough in a building with only 4 offices.

Sorry Del'tar, I just saw the title of this thread and voted without reading the actual story. I just thought if you wanted to know if you suck in general and in that case yes and then some.

But don't fret over the job. It sounds like she might have a idea this might happen in the back of head from the get go. Is she really going to be screwed by getting laid off or will it lead to something better for you? I mean I know one guy who was recently laid off here at work and he went on to a MUCH better job somewhere else. Sometimes these things just work out for people.

Send her flowers anyway though, ya prick.

I don't know if this is one of those "blessings in disguise" Seret. She JUST bought a car...literally, right before the end of the year. And as for her knowing that she was temporary, I know for a fact that was not the case. She was hired under the assumptions that she would take over inside sales while the other sales person would be primarily out on the road.

I guess no one was really counting on me coming back. The reason I stuck around was because right after I graduated, my dad had a heart attack. He was outta comission for a while and the owner is so friggin old' (83) that he gets confused trying to turn on a computer (he was in mexico at the time so it didn't matter anyway). No one knew how to do payroll except me, and the only two people at the company with signing power were unavailable. So, until the owner got back and my dad got outta the hospital, I was making all the decisions. I did an ok job, and my dad had actually expressed that he WANTED me to stick around. Guess nobody consulted the books first :-?

Well after hearing all that I wouldn't sweat it so much. Its not like your the lazy bosses son who doesn't do anything. You came in, did the work and stuck around to do more. This doesn't soften the fact that she has to lose her job, it only gives good reasons besides being the bosses son that you should keep yours.

I mean I worked with the stereotypical "Bosses's lazy son" before. The guy never did anything, just sat in the office on the phone with his girlfriend all day. When the time came for him to do something he would just pass it on to someone else. The guy didn't even have a real job before his Dad owned the place and gave him one.

Just have a little more faith in yourself here. Maybe you are the right person for the job because on top of everything else you started doing the work because you cared and because your father wanted you to.

While I would probably feel the same way you do were I in your situation that does not make you suck. You're forgetting one important fact. If she is let go, or "reduced" and it's not a performance issue they she can file for unemployement and so really you're doing her a favor. Instead of having to work 8 hours to get paid she can search for a job 1 hour a week and get paid nearly the same amount.

So just keep that in mind and remember people like you.

Del'tar, as Seret says, this may be a better thing for her. Take The Godfather Part 2 for example:

Young Vito Corleone gets the can in the family run grocery store because the it's a choice between Vito and the owner's son. Vito goes out on his own, becomes a multi-millionaire and takes his ex-coworker, the son, on as his Consigliere'.

So with the universally accepted knowledge that all life experiences can be broken down to scenes from the first 2 Godfather movies, logically, you and this girl will be working together in the future in charge of a nationwide multi-billion dollar enterprise with you as corporate Chief of Staff.

So you kept the place running for a bit...and instead of everyone losing a job, its going to be possibly one person...You did what you had to, you kept things going, no shame in whats going on in my opinion...How's your Dad doing?

Oh...my dad is doing well now. His docs said that they would never have guessed he had a heart attack 7 months ago based on his current workups. Thanks for asking, folks!
