The biggest draw for me..

..to this site/community's got to be the in character posting boards, yet it's been so long, I'm actually intimidated by them. I haven't actually helped write a story in quite some time (heck, the last time I threw my hat into the ring, I was RPing V:tM on AOL). Do any of you have any pointers? Oh, and please gentle when I "officially announce" Dossk in those threads...

...Here's to hoping I'm not so out of practice.

Second biggest draw has to be the fact that there's real live RPers on Gorath! Admit it, folks.. We're rarer than jedi. And the third? The title.. For any Star Wars fan who doesn't mind a good anthology, the "Tales From" books are -the- ones to read. I guess this is both a "man I'm wigged - look at all these people RPing!" slash "man... What if I'm so out of practice they can actually -hear- me sucking over their computers.." slash appreciation post.

/shrug

Take it how you like. I'm just really excited to be here.

First off, I think I can speak for all of us that have helped build this community from the ground up when I say that we're glad to have you here. This board started as an idea between a few people that hardly knew eachother and has grown into something that I never imagined it would become. I really do think you're right, the in-character boards are truely the heart of what we're trying to do here. They allow everyone to express themselves beyond the game and in ways that test the limits of their creativity. Let's face it, if we weren't all creative to a degree, we wouldn't be playing a roleplaying game. In a time where the majority of the video game market is dominated by games that revolve shallow and weak plots and mindless killing, we are trying to find something more from our gaming experience by becoming our characters and creating an environment that feels alive.

The best advise I can give you for writing in-character stories is to just do it. It doesn't matter if you consider it good or not. None of us are professional writers, and I doubt any of us even aspire to be. I've found that the best thing to help me roleplay in-game is writing about my character out of game. Creating a rich history for your character only makes it more real for you when you play him/her, it allows you to say, "My character would do this in this situation because when he was younger this happened." It creates a basis for everything you do and allows everyone else to get a glimpse into why you play your character the way you do. If you look at the stories I've written, there are two very distinct approaches that I use when writing. Some, like the ones i've written for the current Nocturnus event, are written more off the cuff and are less thought out. That's because those are supposed to be that way, they are more of a way for me to advance the plot outside the game and to give more detail to what's happening in game. Others, like "I would have chosen Love", was much more thought out and took a great deal of time to write, because that story is more of a permanent part of who Zannon is. It defines him and is the basis for much of what he does and why. It had to be better because it is about what makes him who he is. Always remember that, no matter what or how you write, this isn't a contest to see who can do better, it's just a way to make our characters come alive in out own minds and the minds of others.

Being relatively new here myself, Dossk I know exactly where you're coming from. Keer's long form bio will be posted here before the week is done. :D

*chuckle* We're rarer than Jedi should be. Take a trip to the Geonosian Bio Lab during peak times. If every Jedi there was an RP'er we could fill up 2 Crazy Roba nights!

Once again, I'm with you there. In my more relaxed moments I'm thinking "Man, I should really tone down on my *Zip-a-dee-Doo-Dahs* on SWGTales. I probably come off like Flanders from The Simpsons from being so jazzed about this site...": :D

**passes the "Joy Boy" torch on to Dossk** :D Hopefully, we can get many more fingerprints on that Torch, Dossk, with Role Players one day eclipsing, say Master Smugglers in number.

I've been playing this game since week one. And to be honest, it just gets more and more fun for me. This place has a lot to do with my recent excitement. More and more Gorath roleplayers are coming here and the myriad of possibilities that come from having so many creative people in one place is staggering. :D *wipes the froth from her mouth*

As far as posting RP.. I am by far not the expert on this. I would suggest you keep is simple, yet deep enough to shed some light on your character.

Also, dont think you need to start from the beginning. Sometimes it is more fun to start in the middle and "flash back" from time to time to explain your history. This is especially helpful when you don't have every facet of your characters history 100% fleshed out.

Like Zannon said.. just post something. Maybe shed some light on your thoughts about some key events, or characters at the last S&V night. It does not have to be long or complex. In fact, those of us with short attention spans prefer a shorter read. :D

Playing for a year now and I totally agree with Ekade that this site and the members it connects me with are boosting my enjoyment a great deal! It's funny, now when someone runs up to me asking "Can I get a buff" I think - how can I make this more Star Warsy...somehow. Hard when the concept is pretty out-there. But enhancements are enhancements, I suppose.

My advice is to start small so you don't feel overwhelmed. The roots of your motivation in a scene. What made something a good encounter or perhaps just an imagined scene in your head? You just keep building as you go -- your character's story just naturally comes out it seems over time. HAVE FUN! :D

Hey, welcome to our little slice of roleplay pie. Hope you enjoy your time here.

My advice will be just like everyone elses. If you want to get some writing done in the in character forums, write a story and put it up. I'm going to get a few stories in there one of these days. After all, it'll help with my "pass Ekade" post count.

As far as in game RP goes, don't worry about sucking. You'll only get better. This is the first game I've ever RP'd in, and you can't imagine how bad I was when I started. At least you have the Vampire background, so you'll have a good footing to start from. The only thing that saved me and my roleplay was the fact that I was a good story teller.

I created an entire back story for the Colonel. I imagine him to be somewhere in his mid 40s, so I had to cover his entire life. Once I put his story together, I gave him the majority of my personality x2 and I had a character. His back story is pretty in depth and deals with 2 major life altering events.

For instance ***COLONEL BACKSTORY SPOILER WARNING*** (Spoiler deleted because there was no way for me to match text with background color) ***SPOILER OVER***

I'd suggest you create a backstory for your character, and the RP will flow from there.

You replied in the "One End of this Galaxy to the Other" forum, so Zannon pulled it over here in order to keep the IC IC. See? Mmmm... Hi-C.

/wink

Thanks again, though. Glad you liked. :)

You are correct sir!!

Sorry, really wasn't a mod...more of a relocation.

I'm just keeping it in-character over there.

You're right, I just lose track of how many of us there are. I guess that makes us the Admin Supreme Squandron, otherwise known as the ASS.
