First off, this has nothing to do with anyone in particular, it's just the things I've observed on and off of the official boards since I've become an almost 100% IC Spatial RPer ("My hypocracy knows no bounds." -Doc Holliday, Tombstone).
Things that urk me a bit aobut RP in SWG (See also: a prequel to other ponderings to be brought up at a later date*):
1.) Approximately 15 minutes of the entire Star Wars saga is spent in a cantina, yet 99% of all roleplay is conducted there or in the equivolent thereof.
2.) RPers spend much of their time quibbling about "canon," yet do not realize that starwars.com has a hardline definition of canon, seen here (and found in the community/jedi council section):
When it comes to absolute canon, the real story of Star Wars, you must turn to the films themselves - and only the films. Even novelizations are interpretations of the film, and while they are largely true to George Lucas' vision (he works quite closely with the novel authors), the method in which they are written does allow for some minor differences. The novelizations are written concurrently with the film's production, so variations in detail do creep in from time to time. Nonetheless, they should be regarded as very accurate depictions of the fictional Star Wars movies.
-Steve Sansweet, August 17, 2001
Therefore the game it's self is not canon, so bickering about it is a moot point.
3.) Buffing is a gameplay mechanic, so therefore not canon, so therefore not worth bickering about (Yesss.. Sense my hypocracy).
4.) This post is not canon, so therefore is not worth bickering about.
5.) I'm really just miffed at all the canon vs. gameplay arguements, and the fact that all RP's conducted (across all servers I've created characters on) in cantina's/the equivolent thereof.
6.) I really, really like General Grievous. I love his design. I love the decision to juxtapose his color scheme to Vader's. I love that he's mean for mean's sake. I love that the geonosians made him meaner. This can only mean one thing:
He will die like a bitch in Episode III.
7.) If I make up a way for him to live, it will not be canon.
8.) If my way to make him live is ever accepted as canon, He will more than likely end up at a cantina either doing AFK mind buffs or be grinding toward tumble2. This in turn will prime him for my new and improved RP template.
9.) SOE trying to make me believe that banthas are hairless on Kasshyyk is total Poodoo.
10.) And a final pondering.. More of a musing.. We need someone of Palpatine's skills to start coordinating events, maybe mothly that get -everyone- out of the cantinas and into the world of Star Wars (as un-canon as it is), and start living it. I've taken alt upon alt (some alts that my guildies don't even know about) to many an event, and felt my character was instantly added to the entire room's ignore list. I sense.. Stagnance.
*Please take this all with a grain of salt. It's just one man's musings, primarily made to not only make one think, but to make more than one chuckle... Except number six. He's totally going to die like a bitch. I can feel it (And history repeats it's self, thanks to The Fetts).
SW/SWG musings of one who's just beaten food poisoning.
Good idea. What do you suggest specifically?Dossk wrote:...start coordinating events, maybe mothly that get -everyone- out of the cantinas and into the world of Star Wars (as un-canon as it is), and start living it.

Specifics? Well, how 'bout the fact that people can rent sand crawlers and droids for in front of them? Maybe get a ton of crafters together for a Coronet style Tatooine-jawa-roving-strip-mall? That would not only attract RPers, but non-RPers as well.Keer wrote:Good idea. What do you suggest specifically?

Or.. Or.. How 'bout giving the perks a good, hard look and coming up with something, maybe a storyline that doens't involve one person specifically, with nice rewards (donated, of course)?
Or.. Just something.. Not in a cantina?

Well I have to admit as an RP'er I'm a little less concerned with how everything fits into cannon. Sure it's nice but this is a game and I'm willing to let quite a bit slide as long as it stays realistic. SO I don't have an issue with that much.
However I compeltely agree with the whole Cantina theory. This is one of the reasons I attend all the "RP events" To me there not really events, their simply social meetings of cilcks of friends. And I don't really fit in, and often feel left out. Sure part of it's my fault for not pressing in, and I take responsibility for that much, but I'm more about action and less about talk.
I think there have been some improvements made of late trying to start the RP in the cantnia but expanding it into missions for players, and this allows characters to RP in different environments outside of the cantina. It's a good start at least and will hopefully expand to include more people, RP, and more settings.
If you're looking for more of this you may want to talk to Zannon he can probably help you. In my book he's probably the palpantine you're looking for, only not evil. Maybe more like Yoda.

Ambitious and worth a try. When you mentioned this OOC last week it raised a good point. I remember RP'ing around Camps in the wilderness...back when we needed to use camps.
It definitely put "a different sauce" on the RP, as one of my real life ex-SWG player buddies used to say.

Oh yeah if you're looking more for a Palpantine then contact Novall Tallon of MERCS. I bet the two of you could really get some good stuff going. You seem to feel the same way about this RP situation.

Gonna have to disagree with my RP being 99% in the cantina.
Alot of my RP is done in space, in combat, in star ports, out in nature, in enemy bases, in my office. I would say maybe 20% of my RP is in the Cantina.
But I would agree we as RPers are becoming far too concerned with minor issues. IE: Bitching about the realism of buffs and not the realism of dueling in general. (Had to sneak that in.)

I think Dossk was simply implying that all planned RP tends to take place in a Cantina. All the "major" RP events seem to be in cantinas. Not RP in general.Rebecca wrote:Gonna have to disagree with my RP being 99% in the cantina.

I RP a lot and mostly out of a Cantina but it's harder because there aren't events planned. It would be nice to get lots of group RP outside of Cantina's for a different feel is all. And I do think we're trying to move in that direction more.

I don't believe I've ever run across you in game. Good job. Carry on. ;)
What I mean is that the only places I know of to RP with a group of people are at that calendar up there /pointup
Therefore I only go to those places. If you don't, and only spend 10% of your time in cantinas, awesome for you! /patback
Now.. Dogs are not canon. As a matter of fact, real life is not canon, therefore that whole other discussion is Null. Void. No more bickering. /nod

Ok so I guess the next question is... How do we plan events outside of Cantinas? Well... The last big one I remember was the two team duel in Nyms palace.
Which was f!cking awesome!!!
The problem is, events like that take alot of planning... I know me and a bunch of others are working on events like this right now, but it takes time. Alot of time, to work up to them.
Another good example was Zannons marauder raiding.

The problem there is.. Too cliquish, in my opinion. There needs to be things that can attract RPers from outside the loop without it being dancedanceduelduel/keepittotheregulars.
I'm all about a good mixer, but if we worked on the Sandcrawler idea.. Or Just had a good, open ended immersive 3-4 hour event (without Pex - let's prove we can do it alone!) which could pull anyone into it, we'd triple our numbers in weeks. People love to RP.. And I don't care what anyone says, unless you're in SWG for real life monetary gain or to grief, you're there to be a Star Wars character.
We need to bring that out in people.
Now it's up to us.. I want to hear suggestions from the.. Uh.. What do I call us? Rimmers? Heh. Yeah. I wanna hear suggestions from the other Rimmers out there.

I'm going to continue to bump that thing because it continues to slowly grow, and I bet that the majority of people continue to sign up for it and then never think of it again. If you want to make RP, use that list.
