Video game disappointment

I have been sorely disappointed with my last several PS2 gaming purchases and pose a question to anyone out there with an answer.

I am looking for a new game that doesn't suck. Anyone know of such a title? I know it is a tough question, as the market is nearly drowned with shitty titles monthly.

If anyone knows of a good old fashioned "Monster stomps a city" title (War of the Monsters and Godzilla! Save the Earth are both pretty sub-par) pleeeeeeeease let me know. I was in the mood for some "Rampage" style monster ass kickery and was let down by both of these titles.

Also, a decent RPG would be nice. One of my more favorite series' was the Final Fantasy series because it involved a great deal of both action AND story development. Every new one I pick up is greatly skewed towards one or the other of these aspects and, as such, the overall game comes up lacking.

Help me...I am bored!

I will get the ball rolling, just to get the creative juices flowing. God of War was a pretty good title, as far as I am concerned. Brutal and fun, it took me a good 12 hours to get through it the first time. Second time was a hair over 6. The easter eggs and unlocks are kinda boring (with the exception of some of the costumes) and replay is kinda nil once you have beaten it a few times. But I found myself quite addicted by the gameplay. The "puzzles" (if you can call them that) weren't too hard, the game was mostly comprised of stomping the shit out of mythological beasts...which they proved can be very stimulating. Two thumbs up from me.

If you haven't played, StarWars: Knights of the Old Republic, Play it, if you have pick up the new installment, KotOR 2...

Awesome ass game (haven't played the second but heard it was as good or better than the orginal). I'm still playing KotOR cause I don't put much time into it, but it's really fun (RPG).

Recent fun games I've picked up, Midnight Club Racing, DUB edition, (just go into options and change the music preferance)

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, fun party type game, frustrating if anything, but fun to play...

Doom 3, was ok.

I don't know if they made Burnout 3 for PS2, but damn that game is fun.

cant think of anything else right now, I have about 100 xbox games, (most are also made for the PS2) so I can't remember too good :)

Yeah, I suppose I should make this caveat too...I buy games way too damn often, so most of the mainstream big hitters are outta the picture. I liked the original KOTOR game much better than the second. Half life 2 was pretty impressive visually. Haven't played Doom 3 but heard more bad than good about it.

I was thinking more along the lines of the console games that don't get much publicity.

PS2 titles that have been pretty good lately are Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 3.

But if you happen to have an Xbox (or you could simply take a trip over to that brother-in-law's house and snag his) give Jade Empire a try. Its a very, very cool action RPG that you should enjoy. Developed by the same folks that did KOTOR and gleaming with style. The only complaint from some is that its kind of a short game but it does have good replay value.

I guess you posted before you read my entire thread. I already hyped God of War, sajet.

Premature poster.

I have NO idea what you're talking about, Krussh. You should stop playing all those video games, they're warping your reality.

Cursed, admins...the lot of you.

I will get you yet, Sajet...you will rue the day you creatively edited this thread!

Oh, I also recommend a run through or two of the Punisher video game. More mindless slaughter. Not that I encourage wholesale manslaughter in real life or in every video game, it is a good break from the monotony of other genres. And it is fun to hand two knives to someone, and then grab his arms and make him stab himself every once in a while.

Whenever that happens I just sit there thinking, "Quit hittin' yerself, quit hittin' yerself!"

Dude, I'm playing God of War on Medium difficulty, and I can't beat the Minitaur boss to save my life. I can get to Stage III with perfect health and magic AND I have my God mode (whatever the press dual sticks in and get the magic mohawk power thing is), and STILL die before getting the damn thing all the way dead.

I know what my weakness is, and it's that I can't get away from his ground punch where he makes the fire come out of the ground and the bursts chase you around the room. God forbid you get hit by the first one and it auto-chains 3 or 4 of them in a row while you're flailing in air, and lose a quarter of your health bar.

Ok...well the trick to that guy is fighting him from the platform. To avoid his fire punch that sends you up in to the air, you have to be in the center of the platform and jumping when it hits. I don't remember him shooting anything that followed you though. /shrug

What I did was fight him from the platform and rush up to him when you had to go by him and hit "O". He usually snapped out of his little coma by the time I got there, but if you hit him with the lightning spell it sends him back into it and then you steer his ass into the ground and then spear him with the flaming log launcher back on the platform.

If you think this guy is hard, have fun with Ares. He is a little bitch.

If you're going to give Punisher a try I recommend getting the PC version and tracking down the "Violence-is-back" patch. Basically the developers included all the gory details into the game but come launch-time they were forced to censor it down quite a bit. Thus all the torture scenes were reduced to a zoom-in on the Punisher's face and converted to black and white.

The patch puts that ALL back. Makes you wonder since the devs did all that work that go covered up... did they leak the patch themselves?

I'm having trouble tracking it myself. Talk to that Lok'i character that lurks the boards. He's got a knack for finding shizz like that.

Reminds me of the third Dark Forces game (Jedi Knight II), where Ravensoft had to axe their original saber damage. If you put in the cheat codes, and max out the saber damage, you can do realistic saber damage to everyone, including bosses.

We're talking one hit kills all around, and limb/head losses and torso cleavings. The separation points on everyone were: neck, bicep, forearm, wrist, mid-torso, waist, upper thigh, knee, and foot. And yes, even as they're "dead" you could keep cleaving. Nothing like lopping a Stormtrooper's arm off, and while he's going into his slow-fall-to-his-knees death animation taking off his head, and then his other arm, and then his torso, and, oh, the fun never stops.

There's no greater pleasure than facing off against your first evil Jedi guy (I forget what they called them in that game), and while he's still spinning his light saber in his hand, do a force throw on your saber and lop his head off.

But still, I think the best entertainment in that game for the money was the force push/pull. First you pull all of the guns away from the Stormtroopers, and then you shove them off of the catwalks they're standing on. Aren't there any railings in the future/past? Also, the evil Jedi dude who's on that energy conduit thing with the spinning electrified beams of instant death was awesome. He was putting up such an insanely tight saber battle, and then I got frustrated and force pushed him to give myself some distance, not realizing I just pushed him right into the electrified beam and he disintigrated.

Crap, I think I'm going to dig that game out of the basement and re-install it tonight. Too much damn fun.

Jedi Academy. Yes, the dismemberment was a lot of fun.

And the torso saber lop was awesome...I would do the saber appendage lop and then immediately force push to send their pieces scattering.

That dev code was also in the first jedi knight game...but not as complex. And if you turned up the damage too high, it was a little ridiculous. You would walk up to a storm trooper and your lightsaber would just be touching him, and he would like break apart in multiple places. You didn't even have to attack. Just touch em.

Yeah, that was a bit funny. Like, I put in the cheat codes for all items, all force powers, on level one (before you even get your saber), and just bumped into whoever your partner lady friend is, and she fell in half. Game over. I just about died laughing. Mental note: don't bump into partner when saber's drawn.

Anyone local to me have Jedi Academy? The one I was quoting from was from Jedi Knight II, not Academy. You couldn't force push their pieces (in II). I'd love to give that a shot.
