The biggest debate..Was Palpatine lying or telling the truth

Post Reply
he learned all from Darth Plagus, and that included:

taking midichlorians and creating life

preventing death

So was he lying to anakin or did he have those powers?

yes he did say to anakin, that together they could find the secret, but that was just another plot to further bring anakin to his side...

now we all know that only the movies are canon, and that anything else is subject to speculation, but I will put out this...

palpatine was OLD in the phantom menace

the time from ep1 to ep6 is 36 years (see any sw timeline) and he would have lived even longer hadn't he had a nasty fall

I say lying. We all know that lies are the tools of the dark side and he was playing Anakin like a fiddle there. He told Anakin exactly what he wanted to hear in order to get him moving toward the dark side. He preyed on Anakin's fears and Anakin (being about as smart as a sack of hammers) bought it, hook, line, and sinker. I don't doubt that Palpatine killed his master, but the rest of his story doesn't hold water. He keeps saying that Darth Plagus taught his apprentice everything he knows, but admits all over the place that he doesn't know how to prevent death. He wants Anakin to think that Plagus was his master, but I doubt he was.

Plus, think about the nature of the dark side's powers. They all stem from anger, hate, and fear. The dark side is all about death...the Sith live out a cycle of trying to gain power and killing their masters and apprentices. It doesn't make sense that any sort of dark side power would either create life or extend it.

He knew that Anakin needed to hear two things to turn to the dark side...that he was a part of it by being created by it (I'm sure he knew he didn't have a father) and that the dark side had a way of stoping death and he used those two tidbit against him.

He never said Plagus was his master in the movies, though I thought he kinda got a little goofy smile when he was talking about Plagus getting killed like he might have first hand knowledge...but is there any way we know that Plagus was actually his master?

I think it was a lie. I think he could manipulate the force (or midichlorians, bah) to prolong his own life, but to create it? I don't think so. Yoda lives to be 850 years old doesn't he?. Granted, maybe his species is long lived. But I like to think of it as those who are more powerful in the force can manipulate it to benefit them.

I think it was a lie...him playing off of Anakin's attatchments.

Didn't one of the cut scenes have something to do with Palpatine being the one that caused Annie's mom to become preggers? I don't know if George just wanted to leave that as a bit of a mystery or not by not saying much... but all the clues are there.

Palpatine's great interest in Annie before anyone even really got to 'knew' the boy other than his miti count was high and Qui-gon associated it immediately with a Jedi phrophecy seems like a hint to me. Something a 'Sith' could have manipulated in the first place.

I think we're suppose to believe that Palpatine was, indeed, the student that did kill Plagus as well. Now, here's the pox, since we don't have some of the back story... It could have been truth and Palpatine didn't get the secret before he killed his master. So, if we want to speculate, Plagus could've been the one who 'created' life to make Annie. That would explain Palpatine's interest in the boy. Only together could he figure out how to take that power for himself.

Palpatine already had unnaturally long life though. So, we're really left with a lot of speculation on this one. And one of his powers of control as a dictator involved using the Force to influence the masses and, in turn, seep some of their essence to grant him longer life. That's if we want to bring some of the Extended Universe explanations into the fold though.

Is it a possibility for either one to be true? Yes, because if you can think of a story to back it up; It could've been put into the movie. <grins> But, debating is fun, isn't it? :D

Nope, I don't buy that his Tales of Manipulating the force are true but I do believe he was talking about his own master.

Simple reason I don't believe it because I think of the Emperor as a classic TV child-napper. He coaxes his victims with promises of what they want. "I have a new bike at my house. Its yours if you come pick it up." or the classic "Want some candy?" line you see in movies and television. He's just telling Anakin what he wants to hear. He'll tell him anything because he knows how powerfull he is and how much more powerfull he will be with the Dark Side.

Thats my 2 cents.

(note: I refer to my knowledge of kidnapping from TV because I truthfully have no idea how such a terrible thing occurs. My notions are from fiction because real life kidnapping is far too horrible to relate to anything.)
