Chewbacca: Completely Clueless or Overcomensating?

So, I'm watching A New Hope the other night and I get to the cantina scene and catch a line that I've never thought much about before, but this time it just struck me:
Chewbacca here is first mate on a ship that might suit us
So, I ask you guys this question:

Is Chewbacca an idiot and completely clueless or is he trying to impress Obi-Wan and over-compensate for having a dead-end job?

Think about the comment for a minute, "Chewbacca here is first mate on a ship that might suit us". Insn't this like saying, "I'm the second best basketball player on the court" when you're playing one on one with Michael Jordan? He's the first mate on a two-man ship...putting him one step above the mynoks chewing on the power cables outside on the hull!!

I thought maybe Han was feeding him a load of shit the whole time..."Hey buddy, I gotta stay up here and take care of flying the ship and impressing the ladies, but you're the first mate, my right hand man...now go scrub the toilets" and chewie was just such a dolt he bought into it.

So, what ya'll think? Clueless or Overcompensating?

I choose option C) he was simply humbling himself because he owed a life debt to Solo for saving his life. Had he wanted to Chewie could have ruled the Galaxy.

I'm going with: Those were Obi-Wan's words, not Chewie's. Chewbacca's response was probably more like this:

"Grarrrrarrrobble robble robble"

Which either means, "Order me a bantha burger," or "Solo and I fly the fastest ship in the galaxy. He's the best pilot I've seent."

After seeing his home life on the Star Wars Christmas special, I'm surprised that Chewbacca didn't open the throttle up on the hyperdrive for like 8 days straight.

I'm just surprised Chewie didn't recognize a Jedi Knight after Episode 3. Other than that... Being First Mate on a ship isn't really bragging. It's when Chewie goes, "Old Man, Your too good to fly on our ship because 'I' say so and I'm 'only' the first mate of the Falcon!" is when he's trying to toot his horn a little too much. :D
