While listening to my music collection I jammed to a song by Prince called Irresistable Bitch. Not only do I like the song, but it connects me to a memory from long ago....
*Wayne's World Flashback*
1983 Sixth Period Music class, Tuesday "Music Appreciation Day"
My music teacher, Ms. Fogarty, set up a day for us kids to bring in a song that we liked and the class would listen to it and discuss it afterward. Being the hellion-on-the-sneak-tip that I was, I decided to bring in Prince's Irresistable Bitch knowing damn well I'd never get to play it.
To my everlasting (22 years) surprise Ms. Fogarty, who looked like Mary Poppins and acted like a female Spock, looked at my 45rpm ( ) and said "Hm...I don't see anything wrong with it." Huh?! Now, remember this is smack dab in the middle of "Just Say No to Drugs" and not far from being able to hear the word "pregnant" on television. And this was an award winning school on top of that. The class did a collective jawdrop, I put the needle in the groove and for the next 4 minutes and 12 seconds we listened to Prince sing about his sexual obsession with his loose girlfriend.
From then on, I knew that Ms. Fogarty was either a devoutly committed artist or a closet freakazoid...(probably both  ). Either way, she permanently etched herself into my memory whenever I listen to that song.
Where ever you are, Ms. Fogarty YOU ROCK, baby!
How 'bout you all? Do you have a teacher that you will never forget and why?

1st grade teacher Miss May. She wouldn't let me turn in my damn multiplication tables half empty. She made me try again. More importantly, she was extremely hands on, and most memorable, she somehow got the local museum to transport an entire Native American exhibit into our class room (glass cases and all), we constructed a teepee in there (like full size), and got to pick "Indian names," and tribe roles. She picked me to be the girl chief (there was an even number of girls and boys in our class...she chose a girl and a boy for every role. So PC).
11th-12th grade teacher Mr.Rutsky. Creative writing teacher who taught me all I know about writing and really encouraged me with that stuff, was a real mentor.
And just a memorable one...my philosophy professor from a few semesters ago. I also took a Lit. of the Bible/Torah/Koran with him. Extremely bitter guy whose entire purpose in the classes seemed to be making people cry. I did learn a lot from both classes, though.

Mr. Brown, American Literature, Lyons Township High School, Jr. Year, North Campus.
He was amazing. He was able to pull off that whole stand-on-a-table-and-yell "Carpe Diem!" thing without actually having to stand on a table and yell Carpe Diem.
Somehow, he managed to take a class full of kids who were skids, burnouts, geeks, dweebs, losers, skeezoids, and popular kids, and get them all to interact and debate and discuss classic American Lit. Being in that class felt like being in a John Hughes movie (the good parts, where everyone gets along and you feel all fuzzy at the end). I don't know if everyone of his classes was as fun/cool as his, but he sure made us feel special.
The funny thing, is he's also my wife's favorite teacher, and he taught her 2nd grade English class back in Naperville.
Small, small world.

My favorite teacher is Mary Kay Latourneau, the one that banged the 12 year old student. Granted she was never my teacher, but that wasn't the question - just who is your favorite right?

Dr Segert from my Junior and Senior years of College at University of Missouri Columbia.
I had her for several psych classes throughout my last two years, and I did really well in all of them but the last. I flopped on the final and only earned a B in the class...but when she met with everybody to tell them their grades she said to me, "What happened? You didn't do very well on the final?" To which I straight out told her I had no real excuse...I was busy and I did have 4 finals the day I took that one, but I wasn't going to try and justify it. Anyway...she tells me, "Well, your last final wasn't really up to your standard of Excellence and your final grade was a B, but I am going to go ahead and round that up to an A."
My jaw hit the floor when she said that...not a B+ or an A- mind you...a solid A. It was kind of cool to have been rewarded for several semesters of actual hard work when I flopped.
My other favorite teacher is my fiance'. She teaches 4th graders who can't spell to save their lives. I know because I grade their spelling tests.

Mr. Harrison, my tenth grade English teacher. He was fresh from college, and this was his frist "real" job, so he didn't really know what he was doing but that didn't matter. He really did make class fun, and showed me that what I really wanted to do with my life was to teach English, instead of going into physics as I had planned.
Although he also showed me that I wanted to teach at University rather than at a high school level. Because let's face it, the vast majority of high schoolers are little shits, and I can smack a college student/tell him/her to get the Hell out of my classroom.

I'll never forget Gordon (Gordy) Grant. he was my Freshman English teacher and the best teacher I ever had. His view was we're adults and we know what we have to do to learn the material.
So that meant if we felt we could throw snowballs while he was teaching and still learn the material that was fine. And so we did. There's just something about reading Shakspear and getting hit with a snowball the is condusive of learning.
"Alas Horatio I knew him well.." *SMACK* "Why you #$%$"
Yes those were the days.

I've only met four English teachers (from grade school to college level) I didn't like. English--as both a subject and for teachers--just rules.I have to say I'm impressed! I teach jr. high English, and I appreciate all the English teacher love in here!
But of course, as an English major, I am most definitely biased.
