... has only been playing a month and he had a bounty on a Temple member ( You can probably guess if you're a regular here but I can't remember if there was a public announcement. I'm pretty sure there was, but I will refrain from names anyway )
When I explained to him that a Jedi loses experience when they get killed by a BH and in this case it was 250k. Plus Jedi gain experience at a slower rate, His response was:
"O Snap!"
What happens on the Jedi side of the hunt if the Jedi doesn't win was never explained to him. It was after that that he said he wanted to play a Jedi but his current guild didn't want to help him.
New players are a good thing. Beyond all bug fixes and patches, this is what the game needs the most. So I am asking this community to now take a little time and make sure that the person 'griefing' actually understands what they are doing and if not, take the time to explain if they are willing to listen.
We ran into a Bounty Hunter last night...
You gotta be careful about what you call griefing.
I am not trying to start an argument, but I have to say its hard to feel bad for any Jedi who goes in to a group and does 200k in Jedi xp in a day while other Jedi, who are not visible, are solo'ing for 20k a day.
Its not the job of the newbie BH to know this, its the Jedi's job. I am not criticizing the person involved, since I know who it is. That person knew the risk and when I talked to them they were grateful it wasn't worse. I am just arguing the idea that a BH should be informed. If you think about it, the Jedi are the ones that control the situation. If the Jedi wanted to - they could keep the terms empty.
I've seen people go from Padawan to full template Jedi in the past month. One person in particular has not had one BH encounter and their Jedi template will be done within days. Now tell me, what kind of challenge is that?

Well I'm not sure that I would consider this instance griefing. I mean if he had a bounty it's not like he was trying to kill the Jedi 5 times and grief him, it's just his normal part of the game.
However I do think it was good of you to explain the game mechanics, and make sure they understood what was going on.

I think this is a classic example of spider and fly. You can't be upset at the BH for hunting Jedi that how he makes his living, but you feel bad for the Jedi when they lose xp they worked on.... the spider needs to eat, if you save the fly the spider starves. I think its best to just let the BH do his job, if the Jedi doesn't want to be hunted he/she can do the extra work to stay off the terms.

If this newbie BH doesnt undersant hunting...then theirs nobody to blame but their mentors. If his guild isnt properly teaching him the nature and art of the hunt, then they should be ashamed of themselves. After the CU, many people /respected to BH thinking that it was going to be an easy hunt against the Jedi.
Few people really know or care about what it means to be a hunter. This is why I personally involve myself with the training of my hunters, and its why I enjoy recruiting noobs now days.

Bounty Hunting is not griefing.
Anyone who does the jedi grind knows EXACTLY what their in for. Honestly, what IS griefing to me is that after a successful hunt you get some pretty vulger tells from Jedi who dont deserve to be jedi in the first place.
I dont care who in this community is a jedi...if your on the terminals when I'm hunting and I get your mission, I'm going to hunt you.

I dont care who you are, where your at, who your with or what your doing. Your a mark, and your to be hunted. To many hunters already only hunt opposing faction, and those arnt real hunters...their hired assasins.
Isleh, if you become a Jedi I'll hunt you to
Its not personal, its business. If its not personal then it cant be griefing.

Bounty hunting is not griefing if you follow the system, but your attitude can make it pretty demeaning and pisspoor showmanship.

Frankly I look forward to my BH encounters. And I am actually anticipating and will relish encounter real hunters such as Novall and Kirt. I can't wait till the first time they come knocking.Novall wrote:Bounty Hunting is not griefing.

Yea, i gotta say, just like Jedi, Bounty hunting is all in the attitude. "OMGZOR JOO MADE MY LOSE XP!!" or "LOL!!!!11 NEWB I JUST PWNED JOO! JEEDI!"
I see people doing this and you know that the line between game mechanics and griefing is crossed heh.
It's all in the 'tude when it comes to playing those two classes.

How is that? It has nothing to do with showmanship or attitude and everything to do with honesty, honor, and accountability.Dwilah wrote:Bounty hunting is not griefing if you follow the system, but your attitude can make it pretty demeaning and pisspoor showmanship.
If more hunters followed this then we wouldnt have 5 man gank squads, paddies and /respecs crying about nerfing, and a totally hosed up GCW.
So you explain to me where this demeaning and pisspoor part comes in on how I hunt?
In all honesty...bounty hunters should be removed from reb/imp factions all together and made to be nutral. No self respeting or true bounty hunter can honestly chose one side over the other and still be a hunter. At the point in which you choose sides you become an assasin for hire...not a bounty hunter.
This is wy you never see my group with anyone outside of MERCS to hunt a Jedi, and why I discourage more then 2 man groups to hunt one. It shouldnt have to take more then two people if your hunting your mark properly.
Anyhow, I think you should take a long look from inside the system itself as it works now before you comment about the way I play it.

Of course, it's personal. It's personal to the person you just killed as their xp is lost. I think in a way that is griefing. This is the exact reason why I hate PVP. I can understand the business aspect. I think the very nature of PVP encourages griefing and that is why I hate PVP. All the "work" someone has put into their character development is lost. When should it ever be "work" to develop your character?Novall wrote:

The game needs an outright player bounty system and not just one against jedi. Their needs to be a fairly elaborate system that allows you to place a bounty, hunt a mark, but not grief them. The only reason BH was limited to jedi is because in the begining, the Devs knew that BH success was always going to be lower then the fail ration. In beta there was a stream of crap unleased about player bounty systems and having a third underwold faction.Illbleed wrote:Of course, it's personal. However...what we have now-days is but a comedic joke of a BH system honestly, and I play in it the best I know how with whats been given the player.
Sure, it sucks to get killed. Especially when it takes so long to get FS xp. Beleive me, I have enough of that stuff saved up to literally unlock another FS tree in one go if I ever wanted to be a jedi. So I can sympathize with that totally and no I dont get kicks out of hunting my friends, thats not the way bounty hunting works for me.
So, just like Obi Wan said in RoTj....its all a point of view. In SWG I play a character that hunts people for money and carries mercenary type work, and my point of view is that he has a job, and the job comes before anything else to Novall because if he cant honor the contract then he ovbiously has no honor at all.
Black or White...theres no grey areas
