11 billion yen? Thats only approximately $100 million US. It's practically a steal! SWGtales field trip!
Bang! Zoom! To the moon, Alice!
Last time I checked:
- 2 out of 3 of the gyroscopes on the ISS were malfunctioning or not functioning at all.
- the remove/repair/replace of said g-scopes were on hold due to the Space Shuttle program delays and the inability of the Russian's sturdy but limited ferrying capacity
- the Russian Soyuz ferries regularly use their rockets to boost the ISS into the orbit that it needs to be (because of the gyroscopes not working properly).
- the station is suffering structural stresses occasionally due to the boosting maneuvers of the Soyuz and the condition that it was meant to correct, that being the ISS sitting too low in orbit and coming into contact with thicker atmosphere.
And still the nations on the ISS charter are willing to allow tourists?
I understand that money can be made from these trips that will possibly help the space program, but I think that recent past experiences should temper these actions. Respect space travel as an activity and environment that demands our "A-game".

Well, according to the articles about Discovery's latest journey up there, things aren't quite so bleak. They replaced the gyro that has been nonfunctional since 2002, and they rerouted power to the spare that hadn't been working since a circuit breaker failure. So as of right now, I think (who's to say it will be the same tomorrow, though) the station has all 4 gyros operating (3 full-time and 1 spare), even though the claim is that it only needs 2 to operate normally.

Now that is good news to hear. Those gyros are working again. I'd heard that they were still on the fence about what to do about it prior to Discovery launch. It's a great fix to make now since future shuttle trips are uncertain.Krusshyk wrote:Well, according to the articles about Discovery's latest journey up there, things aren't quite so bleak. That station is a thing of beauty even in it's unfinished state. I hope we can complete it and get all the labs working.
