If any of you Midwesterners go, see if you can find out the recommended video card for it.
Looks like it's gonna be an Nvidia something based on the booth.

What do you mean? You ARE going. Zannon said so. If you pull out now he'll get angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry....

Dude, if you bought a video card to run Doom3, JtL isn't going to push your hardware any faster. Just bite the bullet and get the 6800 already
To be honest, though, the 5950 is actually RUNNING the game for me on my 1.4 Ghz system. I'm under the min specs for the main proc for Doom3 but that vid card will still run it.

You can get either an FX5900 or 9800 Pro now for about $200...I have seen some as low as $175, if money is an issue. If you are going to get a 6800 go for at least the 6800GT...the standard 6800 is only 128megs and the core and mem are lower, the GT is a liitle more in price, but its a 256meg card and it has a higher core and mem setting...plus people are saying you can overclock 'em to a 6800Ultra spec. Alot of games are going to be taking advantage of cards with more RAM. Doom3 in Ultra requires 500MB of Video RAM to run optimally...

I am glad you guys know about video cards, I am just about clueless.
I do think I need a new one, however. Here is how I know why.. I take screen shots every now and then, and they look fine.. just like the game does. Well someone send me a screenshot that they took.. and it blew me away. I get the feeling I am missing out on some neat looking stuff.
So riddle me this.. What is a decent video card that is not ourrageously priced?

Video cards? Outrageously priced? Never heard of it..lol. It really does depend on your specific needs. You can get away with a Radeon 9200 series card for a fair ammount of money. I would not go beyond 128MB of memory on the card unless either A. Your uber or B. Your uber and rich. The more memory on the card the quicker the card is able to calculate and draw the textures(though it won't speed up how quickly they get to the screen--that depends more so on how much system memory you have and other geeky factors). I prefer Radeon myself, even though they are bit pricer...more things to tweek. If your on a budget(as I am right now) you might want to look at NVIDIA chipsets..everybody and their mother makes those cards now so you should be able to find some good deals.
You can check out
www.newegg.com which usually does pretty good..God, I can't remember who plugs New Egg on this board..funny stuff..
or if you know specifically what part your looking for you could go to Insight's website

Or
www.Pricewatch.com
Totally depending on your price range.. I just picked up an Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 with 256 MB of ram on it.. This thing rocks.. but it was 300 bucks..
Also in my recent testing and my upgrade from 256 MB of SYSTEM RAM to 1 Gb. If you have 256MB of ram or lower (god forbid you are lower than that) the game auto disables the high quality features it has, such as high quality meshes, and bump mapping, which make a huge differance to the way the game looks. so if you only have 256MB of system Ram I would get some more of that too..

Whenever I build a new comp, I always use Pricewatch. They've never steered me wrong, and everything is so cheap.
