Game Addiction: What Games "Hooked" You?

Another thought provoker from a Jabe post...

Not talking about a game that you just liked to play for a long time and had fun doing it. But I mean a game that did start to affect your life in a negative way, however minor. I've had a few and I remember someone here talking about a Willow video game hooking someone hardcore.

For me it was:

- Pirates! - In 1989-90 the first floor of my small dorm at Kent State University was ruled by this game. Yes, I skipped a class or two...or more from playing Pirates! until the wee hours of the morning. First because it was fun, second because a competition started up among us for who could max out the personal wealth in the game (655,635 gold pieces) in the shortest amount of time. Commodore 64 and 128 days. Then the grades came in, Digital Underground dropped Freaks of the Industry, and we put it to the side for some other campus stupidity. Still to this day I can waste 6-8 hours on the Nintendo NES version of this game and barely feel it.

- Civilization - Another product from Sid Meir's crack emporium. This one actually had some benefits during some very boring downtimes in transit while I was overseas. It was a good time killer. Though, there were days and nights that I sat bloodshot-eyed trying to beat Caesar, Napoleon, and Genghis Khan.

- SWG - Rarely was hard to turn off until the Geonosian Bio Lab first hit the game. Back when it was really difficult for my Smuggler/Pistoleer skillset to get through (Feign Death-o-Rama) with one friend. It reminded me of Aliens and I had alot of fun with it (and all of the Geo Mercenaries looked like Charles Barkley). Repeated Geo Lab runs hit me hardest. I was up wayyyy past any sane bedtime.

My name is Keer T. and those are my three former game addictions.

My first game that I was actually addicted to to the point where I could have been abducted by aliens given the amount of lost time I experienced was Legend of Zelda.

I would sit down and start playing and wouldn't stop until I was shaking from not having had anything to eat or drink all day. granted I was maybe 10-12 at the time.

Civilization - Same deal as Zelda only I was an adult and had to go to work =/.

America's Army and SWG were my most recent until my wife pointed out that she would like to sleep with me once in a while and now I severely limit my online time when at home. So I guess my wife was my twelve step program.

Ok, here are mine...

Civilization - No other game has ever taken up more of my time than this puppy(until SWG). It started on my Amiga and has been installed on every computer I've owned ever since.

Star Control II on the 3DO - Damn, what a great game. I still own it, even though I don't play it anymore (still own the 3DO too).

Road Rash on the 3DO - The greatest of the series, it was the first game to use real bands to do the music. All other incarnations of Road Rash just weren't as fun. I still play this one to this day.

Out of this World and Flashback - Loved these games soo much, I bought them for the computer, the 3DO, and sega Genesis and beat them on all three systems.

Eye of the Beholder II for Amiga - Flat out great game.

Outlaw Golf for X-box - Great game. The 2nd one is a bit frustrating, but still decent....and it was only $20 when it came out.

Star Castles - My first arcade love...The majesty of vector graphics at their best. If I could find one of these for sale somewhere, it'd be in my house.

World War II Online- God damn, I still love this game and am looking forward to the re-release next month. Many a nights I spent hunting Char b's in my 38t until the sun came up.

Ultima Online - I bought this the day it came out and played about a year, I loved it...until it became a grief fest and then I quit.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter - This game was ahead of it's time and I wish they re-make it using today's technology, because it'd be great, making custom missions and campaigns for this game keep it on my computer years after the game died.

Trogdor! The Burnanator - Damn that homestarrunner.com, every time I get a few free minutes at work I'm playing this sucker.

For me it was game systems in general. The Nintendo and Super Ninetendo were time monopolizers for me. My problem is that I always found 2-3 games I liked and those would be the main ones I would play through the life of the console/system.

On my PC there was X-Wing for MS-DOS. This was way before Windows 95 and Xwing vs Tie Fighter. I am talking 320x200 graphics man. I was hooked, especially when the mission editor came out and I put it on my BBS for all my other homies to download.

Then I got XvT (where I first formulated Jabe Adaks as a human pilot). Then a long, long, long (nearly 10 year) gap of not playing anything cause I had lost interest. Then SWG, which has been the most addicting game for me of all time, much to the dismay of my wife. :)

My originals were on a Mac...

The three included:
-Apache Strike (wire frame goodness)
-Net Trek (probably the first attempt at a Star Trek-esque game without an offical license... and shareware)
-The Bard's Tale (something about those wireframe dungeons and table-top rpg dialouges ruled... and it was chock full of humor)

A little later down the road:
-X-com (to this day I want a per-batum copy of the original with updated graphics)
-X-wing/ Tie Fighter

Now:
-Did Lineage 2 when it hit stateside... dumped it quickly because of a horrible in game economy.
-World of Warcraft (on off and on)
-SWG (I love it here... anyone have jawa beer and some blob candy?)

The Future:
-Star Trek online
-Dungeons and Dragons online
-Warhammer online (if anyone picks up the license from Citadel again)

*I'd also like to waist countless hours playing any version of Star Fleet Command (the adaptation of the table top wargame Star Fleet Battles). Space Naval Battle rules! Especially when you get to blow up Klingons off the starboard bow!

Colonization
-this game just ruled my life when I was 12. Being able to colonize america over and over again, it was awesome.

Jagged Alliance
-I never played through it and still was sitting in front of this game for ages. Here a guard I didnt get, there a cool item and then the search for all items in an area...great

Baldurs Gate 2
-I got this game as a present, it was the first one I wanted to have. And it kept me for over 200 hours. Story, feeling, atmosphere - great.

X-Wing Alliance
-played through it 5 times, never got boring. It took hard nights to get through some missions, I cursed, I cheated and it was a hell of a time. Cool thing was: I played it with my brother. Me with the joystick, him doing the keyboard commands.

Max Payne 2
-Just bought it for an apple and an egg because I saw it and I had to play through it. The whole atmosphere is so cool for me as a movie fan. Directly after it, I got myself the first Max Payne and its waiting to be played.

Republic Commando
-hard mission, cool command mode and a nice storysetting made this short game a "hit f5 and f9er". never quickloaded and -saved so much before.

SWG
-When I first heard about it I was 15. When I first played it I was 17. Now I am still in this game and all the possibilities of Roleplaying and Eventmaking will keep me. I made some real good friends in this game and I love the people I am playing with.

:)

Younger generation, what can I say :)

I remember once I was so dead tired in game that I put Keer on Auto Follow...just in case. I was going through the "machine-gun" eyeblinks but I was able to stay awake.

Then I noticed that the guy I had the Auto-Follow on was running kinda irrationally. I sent tells...

- Hey, man you there?

Seret responds, "Holy sh!t man. I'm sorry Keer, I gotta log. I've been asleep for the last 3 mins.

For you Privateer fans... do you ever miss that old crate box we used to fly? :D

And did you ever play Wing Commander: Prophecy? It was my understanding that that was some sort of sequel to it.... and too dang bad they scrapped the MMO for Privateer. That would've been hella fun!
