Musical Escapades

"Words are flowing down like rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they as they slip away across the universe,
Something something waves of joy are drifting through my opened mind
Posessing and caressing me
Something something something something
Nothing's gunna change my world
Nothing's gunna change my world
Nothing's gunna change my world."
So this is what I was going on to try and figure out what this song was. Heard a remake of it over and over again at work and heard a snippet of the original in some fanfilm (that didn't list music in the credits, thanks geniuses). I was like HMMM, sounds suspiciously like the Beatles. So, with a little help from Google, I figured out what it was called, and went after Across the Universe on iTunes.
Well, good lord. There's literally twenty-two remakes of the song, including on particularly HORRID version by David Bowie, some weird....elevator techno thing with a robot singing...a surfer dude version...
....and no copy by like, anything resembling Lennon/McCartney/Beatles/whatever. Color me sad. I say to you iTunes, WTF? You have four albums by my favorite obscure Japanese artist and not this but twenty-two remakes of it? Is there some weirdness behind the song? I rely on my more musically worldly and informed friends at SWGTales to clue me in.
