The project is based on a requirement of the pentagon to make a certain percentage of groung vehicles unmanned by the year 2015.
I think I pooped myself... because the armor suits (hinda like an HEV suit from halflife) should also be in use by then.

Aw man, the moped guys didn't even qualify 
Discovery or someone ran a documentary on the college kids who entered that contest (or a similar one) with a moped. It was amazing to watch their progress, but I don't think it could handle the really rough terrain.

I used to watch the Army research lab do that stuff. Crazy thing is they have a lot larger than HMMWV's as unmanned vehicles.
