Windows flipped out on me

I left Homeworld 2 running last night with the menu up. When I came down this morning the comp had blue screened.

Upon reboot I get some thing saying it needed to check the file system, I was like... "are you kidding?" *clicked skip*

Windows comes up with defaults like I had reformated, showing me the little box with "click here to start"

I was thinking "holy crap, 2 years of stuff down the drain."

but after looking I see that all my files and programs are there, just the folders and icons aren't on my desktop and toolbar.
All my game Icons are on the toolbar, and I have a few extra folders on my desktop. My documents is empty, but I replaced the default folder with a shortcut to the actual folder for now. I don't have any clue what happened, or if my config, or init file were somehow toasted.

Back up anything you can any way you can. Then:

My Computer -> Properties -> Tools -> "Check Now..." Button
-> Check "Automaticall fix file system errors" -> Click "Start"

If it asks to reboot to fix problems do it. Why you lost all your settings, not too sure.

Primary Computer down...

I'm on my junky old laptop. I am going to beef up this thing's immune system and try to pull files from my primary to make backups before I purge the thing.

any other suggestions?

windows is up, and I was lucky to have and explorer window open. I cant view anything in any of the folders or my computer, because all the windows just show a broken pic icon or something in a corner. AVG is toast, along with everything else. I ran tests yesterday and have no clue what hit it.

I have mounted a defense, and my Primary computer is back up.

Any advice on a good free CD burning program to back my junk up? and maybe copy some stuff while I am at it?

I would just buy a new hard drive and rebuild using that. Connect your old hard drive in place of your cd-rom when you are done and copy everything you want off of it.

theres a trick to it, but I went through station.sony.com and cancelled anyway. Primary Computer seems to be up and running ok. I am burning stuff to DVD's now. I am going to avoid the reformat for now, allthough I this Christmas makes 2 years since the original build and format.

Someone gave me a CD that will hopefully get desktop #2 back up and running. I have been leaving my extra monitor at dad's and taking my tower up there. So I figure I can bring it back, assemble my little bar/workstation into... well... a double.

I was surprised that my laptop didn't completely crash out on me while I was fooling with it today. The thing is total crap normally.
