Mexico or Bust

Me and the wife are headed to Mexico again this year.

We started out trying to raise $1700 so that we could go. That doesn't include money for our personal expenses and passports.

We are taking shoebox gifts to the children and we deliver food to the mothers and families. We also take down whatever things we can fit on the buses to give away. There is a lot of work, and not a vacation, unless you consider 46 hours on a modified schoolbus is fun. And the buses have a few of the old schoolbus seats, a portable toilet, small table and water tank. We had three buses (two that had seats) and 42 people. I spent most of my ride sleeping on the floor of the bus.

We visit some of the poorest colonias and villiages in Mexico. These ARE NOT the places you will likely see on vacation.
Last year when the tsunami hit southeast Asia we were in a colonia nicknamed "new Jerusalem." A couple months earlier it had been hit by a large wall of water.
According to the missionaries, authorities had been warned by a farmer that a dam was about to give way. They did nothing for weeks, when finally the farmer called them and said "This is it, the Dam is gone."
A Wall of water poured through New Jerusalem and other colonias without warning, destroying hundreds of makeshift homes. Hundreds were killed, while officials watched from a hill.
At that point it was too late for them to do anything anyway.

One thing I learned last time I was there was that the people of Mexico are not the way we see or think of them. They don't have the kind of support that we do here in America. There is no unemployment, no Social Security. If the breadwinner in a family dies, they may starve.
One family a friend of mine visited, lived in an 8x8 sheet metal house, family of 5 with one on the way. Their Jobs only kept a bit of food on the table. (most of the housing material was pallets, sheet metal, cardboard and tarp. Well to do folks had some block houses, lumber is practically non-existant)
Some people say, "Why can't people just use protection, or stop having kids."
Well, lets see how many here in the states are guilty of the same things, while having NO EXCUSE! First, we have systems like "planned parenthood" and WIC. There is no such thing there.

Teachers work on a volunteer basis, no pay.
Pastors make maybe $40 a month, if they are lucky (try feeding your family on $40 a month) And couldn't afford school supplies for their kids.
Minimum wage is about $3 a day.
You work until you can't, that's "retirement"

Sorry for the little rant, but hopefully it's informative.

As it stands we have more than $1000 to raise, and the deadline has passed. We will pay our own way regardless, because we really want to do this. I am not asking for a handout, but if you feel that you could help that would be awesome. I also have some pictures from last year, hosted on limited bandwidth. I will try to dig up a URL for BUSES international too.
It's something like BUSES-international.org

here's someone's humble home:

I know you said you really wanted to do this, but a budgeting solution would be to hold off this year and save the cash for the trip, do double next year. Or, donate your cash to someone else who's already going to max out the give factor of their trip.

The others have to raise the money themselves, and people on the waiting list wouldn't have enough time to raise what's left. We are at a point of no return, and we really want to do this.

BUSES has done a lot of mission work, especially this year. They helped the hardest hit areas of the hurricane here in the states.
We are short of our (the organization) usual amount of shoebox gifts as well. People have really given till it hurts this year to many charities.

why not help out the thousands of families here in the USA that are poor or homeless, including the ones displaced by katrina and rita?

Is this the organization Whar? If so to answer Skor's question they have done trips to Mississippi and Louisiana for hurricane relief as well. In the end people are people and as mismanaged at times as FEMA is at least people in the States have governmental relief, thats not always the case elsewhere.
Any good someone can do is better then doing nothing at all.

I understand really wanting to go, but sometimes if you just can't make ends meet, you might better help the cause by donating to someone else's trip or waiting until next year.

Plus, like Skor mentioned, there's plenty to do here within our own borders. There's lots of very needy families that you can help within your own community. Check into regional and local youth homes, homeless shelters, and midway houses and I bet they would put your name on a plaque and you'd get a free logo sweater for $1000.

If you really want to do something internationally, there's Heifer International, which is available at http://www.heifer.org/ They offer a really neat way to give gifts in people's honor to needy families across the world in the form of animals, which provides a livelihood rather than just temporary aid. You know, teach a man to fish type of thing. Great Christmas gifts for grandparents--they love that kind of sentimental crap. :) $1000 will buy a lot of beast there.

These are just ideas, though, because there's a LOT of ways to help out at all times of the year and not just the holiday season (we all forget that)--best of luck getting to Mexico.

ok, I understand that there is lots to be done everywhere. Mexico just happens to be where I can do the most good at the moment.

This isn't about getting my name on a plaque, or a T-shirt. BUSES works with folks in the areas we visit to establish systems to help them grow their own food, and build their communities.

Thanks to a donation I recieved today I still need $800. Any and all extra money I can generate will be spent on items I can give to families and churches to help them and their neighbors.

Zyre, thats the group. They do several trips a year, and there are several spin-off projects now too.

If I pay the rest myself, that will just be an inconvenience. It all makes me feel pretty selfish considering I have a house (or two) and food. Yet here I am with all these luxuries (computers, internet, tv)

Hopefully, charity never is, but I just meant that they'd be so happy to get it lots of charities give out that type of stuff to show appreciation for larger donations. :)

I only have about $200 left to raise now WOOT!!!

Also... locals i know have given me about 60 shoebox gifts to add to our total of (as of last week) 2000

Last year we took about 3800 boxes, and were able to distribute several pallets of food.
