I use to back in highschool and had planned on it whenever I actually got to a University for College... just never panned out so I've got a bunch of minatures just waiting to be painted someday.

I played Warhammer myself. Was rather fond of the Dark Elves and had to go up against my older brother's army of Ork 'Whhhaaaagghhh' or whatever the heck it was. Never could make it out since he'd yell it in my ear before we started.

If I had gone 40k though... I would've went Space Marines or Eldar. I think at the time it was out when I was playing they had a Seperate Imperial Gaurd faction too. Was going to make a mix and match Imp Gaurd/Space Marine Squad if time ever permitted.

For my base paints I always used 'The Armorey' primer spray cans. A nice black for a darker looking finish or a white for the bright cheerful look.

I never stuck to one kind of paint though. Used some crackly stuff from Wal-Mart designed to make 'camo-peel' and some Citidel/AD&D mixes. I'm guessing now I should've taken up just a bit of Art with my Community College given how much I had enjoyed that hobby. Still have my # 3, 0, 1,... etc, etc brushes as well. Eyes always were the hardest thing to do for me. How about you?

you know that the 2/3 branches of the inquisition use marine/guard minitures and the eyes are easy if you have a magnifying glass, two extra hands and one of those one-hair-brushes....i make senary as well, like barbed wire fences, fences, tank traps, ect. and you can use those old castle things, the mountans from army men packs, legos( i like legos best sence last time i counted a had around....3.157 million of them) and what ever your mom/girlfriend has when see gets done shopping and buying presents. and as for the ork thing...i hate orks...thay can't even spell "truck" right...waaah!

For the eyes, start with the eye color...red, blue, black, whatever. Then add your light gray, not white, to the lower corners. Use a toothpick for control...not a brush. Then paint the face.

Personally, I prefer to start with a dark wash of the entire face, then build up in about 5 colors from dark to lightest skin tone...with a dry brush. I don't bother with the eyes because you wouldn't be able to see them anyway. They are either fighting at night or under heavy smoke. In either case, they are screwing up their faces with effort or emotion, thus slitting their eyes.

The Kroot are still the best to paint...most fun, followed by anything that uses metal. I love tanks.

Oh yes, if you can't afford a mag-glass to attach to your table, get a pair of those el cheepo reading glasses from the drug store...about a number 2 or 2.5.

Then be prepared to see funny when you take them off after painting for 4 hours.

*looks at game books and minatures on the shelves*

Been awhile since the ol' D20 did a critical hit in any game for me. Mayhaps I'll look at this 40k stuff in the near future.

If you haven't already... a fairly decent computer game for 40k is available. Just not an MMO yet. You might like 'WH 40k: Dawn of War' if you don't already have it.

sorry no d20...not yet i think...but i cant get dawn of war...egh my comps fast enough but well..nvm.... but 40k is a good way to get out of the house for that much needed...umm..."human interation" i think thats what thay call it....if you can call a 3000pt game that takes 3 hours to complete the first 6turns...but i loved seeing all those minitures on the feild...attacking, retrateing.....killing on command....by the time it was over, the store was full of people watching MY game :D ...it has its ups a downs

I loved the tabletop gamming when I did it. Warhammer is not too far different from it's 40k brother. I remember taking an entire day just to play one game. And once we figured out our strategies and skills a little better it could take us into the next day just to play one battle. That was fun.

Heh... sorry about the d20 thing... think I just miss pencil and paper RPGs period.

It seemed like it shrunk when the Collectible Card Games hit then picked back up a again once the MMO craze finally hit. Leaving dust to collect on the beloved Dungeon Master's Guides across many musty smelling gamming hide aways across the nation.

Warhammer seems to still be going strong though. Tabletop for teh win I guess.

If your into Naval Battles (I know Warhammer had one)... and don't mind the sci-fi twist... there is always Star Fleet Battles as well. I'd say it cuts the $$$ spending in half and actually adds far more strategy complexity to the table top gamming experience.

Impulse turn was about like doing a flank turn in Warhammer.

I think you two have me looking at my minatures again. I've got this naked little Warhammer familiar wanting painted so she can stand next to her Dark Elf Warlock guy.

the real trick is to combine the battlefleat gothic game to its 40k ground battle, so you can suck on the field but rule in space and kill all the troops on the ground...and vice versa. the only real theng i had to make up is the rules for attacking the ground targets from space...but i think ifinaly got it.

My brother always went for realism... as much as we could get. So, we too did combination games.

There was the West End Games Star Wars Minatures Battles and RPG which did allow for some pretty massive space battling, yet simple, if you wanted to do it. Combine that with the ground game (Minatures Battles) and we had our set up.

I think this could be applied to the 40k games. Essentially you'd start with the Space Battle. Whoever won that match would have a point advantage when you went to do the ground battle. More troops. To keep 'balance' though the losing space battle side would get an orbital bombardment token to use during the ground battle. We had to make our own chart to decide what was a fair scale to 'dodge' or take 'half damage' on it... but after we ironed it out it worked and kept playing battles like that in unision very very interesting, fun, and fair to both of us.

The alternative always went that whoever won the space battle pretty much kept the advantage when you went for the ground battle and did lessen the fun. So... there was a little give and take on the realism.
