Two Stations Won't Air 'Book of Daniel'

By RACHEL ZOLL, AP Religion Writer Thu Jan 5, 4:51 PM ET

NEW YORK - Two television stations are refusing to broadcast a new NBC series about an Episcopal priest who abuses painkillers, has a gay son, a promiscuous straight son, a daughter who deals marijuana, and a wife who drinks too much.

Conservative Christian groups have condemned the depiction of Jesus as blasphemous, accusing the writers of portraying Christ as tolerant of sin in talks with the priest.

NBC affiliates KARK in Little Rock, Ark., and WTWO in Terre Haute, Ind., said sensitivity to viewers led them not to air "The Book of Daniel," which debuts Friday. In Little Rock, the WB affiliate has arranged to show the drama instead.

"If my action causes people in our community to pay more attention to what they watch on television, I have accomplished my mission," Duane Lammers, WTWO's general manager, said in a statement on his station's Web site....
it's called satire asshat

**I hope this observation won't be considered a religious debate. If so, it'll be my first one on this forum, and honestly by accident.**

I haven't seen or read these scripts that they've mentioned in the main story, but just based off of the grief that the premise of the show has brought:

What if they changed the premise to eliminate the drug abuse and all the rest for a series about a priest coming to grips with his pedophilia?

Every episode or so he has his conversation with Jesus about how he doesn't want to molest children but he can't stop himself and is too ashamed to come out with it. Jesus, in a positive portrayal, tries to convince him that His forgiveness is greater than any shame he could suffer in this world. Stop and atone. *shrug*

They couldn't say that NBC, the show's creators, or anyone else was coming out of left field with that one. That is some stuff that has and still does actually happen.

...but of course, someone would still have a problem even though it's art imitating life (at least the pedophilia part).

Somehow, I think the person involved would be an asshat even if religion wasn't involved. It's just the medium that they focus their idioicy on.

Kinda like Otto from "A Fish Called Wanda"

Wanda: To call you stupid would be an insult to stupid people. I've known sheep who could outwit you. I've worn dresses with higher IQs, but you think you're an intellectual, don't you, ape?

Otto: Apes don't read philosophy.

Wanda: Yes they do, Otto, they just don't understand it.

Umm, Keer...I think you have the wrong religious group...I don't think the Episcopalians have had a problem with ministers molesting younglings. Ministers get married, priests don't. However, there are enuff children of ministers/pastors who do go a bit overboard to give a little credence to the story line.

More than a little creedence here.

LOL

I'm sorry. I just got a mental image of the boss's termination speach starting off with:

"NBC has a strict policy against morality... "

Personaly I do have a bit of a gripe with this new show. I dont really care that they are depicting Jesus in they're show. I saw an iterveiw with the director and he said that it isn't really Jesus its the ministers own internal monolouge and represents what the minister could imagine Jesus saying about the situation.
What my gripe is with the show is the dicomody of the family. Hollywood has a very negative view of religion. If your really religious your either a rasist, sexist, homophobe that is better sutied in the stone age than the modern age, or deep down you or your family repesent everything that you think is inmoral making you a hipocrite. Hollywood really hates the idea of a right and wrong and think that anyone that would make a moral judgement on any action to be a lower life form. This show is just another example of that veiw of the relgious in America.
There are some well writen shows that dont stoop to this like 7th Heaven but those are the exeption to the rule these days.
Either way I wouldn't have pulled the show. Why? Well I believe in a free market and if the people dont want to see a show that would belittle your religious believes then the show won't get good rattings and get cancled in a year or two.

Have you ever seen "Ben-Hur"? "Passion of Christ"?

What about "Chronicles of Narnia"?

To be perfectly honest, I saw the preview for it before "My Name is Earl" and I'll be damned if I didn't think it looked damn funny.

Well, I will probably be damned for lots of other reasons too..., but seriously...you can't tell me that Jesus sitting in the passenger seat saying, "You're tailgating" to a priest in the driver's seat doesn't have some potential for hilarity.

It's clearly a joke. People need to chill out. It's a friggin' sitcom, not a documentary. Laugh a little...I don't think there's a religion out there that says it's not okay to laugh at something every now and again.

Censorship, no matter what the subject matter or question of whether the product "should" be made, is still censorship. If the show is just trying to shock audiences for no other purpose to shock them, it won't make the line-up next year. I believe the viewing public for the most part is past that fad. If the show is truly funny and satirical, it has a shot.

As for everyone that feels the need to dictate whether it is on the air or not, I feel they should be welcomed to the new millenium. There is plenty of other programming out there. If they really feel offended by the show's content, don't watch. Ratings are all that matter, and by creating controversy over the show, they are only adding to the publicity. Besides, it's NBC, who's going to be watching anyway?

What if I made a show depicting captain Kirk or Darth Vader as gay, and it was authorized as Canon.
