Parents playing videogames

SAN JOSE, Calif. - In a sign that video games are becoming more popular as family entertainment, a national survey released Thursday indicates joysticks aren't just for kids.

Thirty-five percent, or about one in three parents, say they play, too, and 80 percent of that segment play video games with their children, according to the new survey commissioned by the Entertainment Software Association, a video game industry group.

The average "gamer parent" spends 19 hours a month playing video games, and spends roughly half that time playing alongside kids, the survey found.

Two-thirds of the gamer parents said they feel that playing video games has brought their families closer together.
Other survey findings: The typical gamer parent is 37, and almost half the group are women. Twenty-seven percent of gamer parents began playing video games around the same time their children started.

The survey of 501 parents with children between the ages of 2 and 17 was conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates in November 2005. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.4 percent.

That doesn't seem overly odd. Are most of the parents in the 30-50 yr old range from the study? *edit* Just caught the last part of that last qoute. That answered my question.

If so... I mean... most of us are a part of a technology age. We're just moving from everyone having played Chess on a game board to playing it on a computer; Right?

Very interesting though. :)

I've encountered at least 2 gamer moms who play alongside their teen kids. One who runs her guild half composed of her daughter and all of her friends.

At first I was somewhat skeptical until a few times I'd get /tells on the side saying "The other two members in our group are my son and his friend. If it's okay with you can you not use profanity. Thanks" ( :!: ). Then I'd get on Teamspeak and it was genuine.

Interesting. If I had kids I'd LOVE to run through an instance and take down mobs with them. Too bad my niece and nephew aren't into MMO's....yet.

My parents are in their fifties.
My dad had to go to NY this week on business. He took a spare desktop PC to play while at the hotel.

Yeah, I believe that...I stopped by my friend's house the other night and he was on his way out the door with his Xbox. His dad said, "Are you taking the Xbox? You asshole! You should never have let me play that thing."

He is 57. It's nuts.

I have dreams of Family Clan Night where we all log on and frag up servers, LAN style in the basement. Bring the friends, sure, it's all good!

Unfortunately my daughter's only 19 months old and just recently has learned how to use her Elmo phone and Leappad. Not quite ready for BF2 yet.

if she's anything like her father, she gets pissed at her leappad, curses into the elmo phone, picks up something else to throw across the room, then logs out for the night

My daughter is 6.. and loves playing her little learning video games on the computer.. it's a great way to spend time together. She's also quite proficient when using a mouse.. Though it will be a long time before I allow her to play online games, due to the fact that you have a bunch of people who like to cyber, you have some people who are just rude.. and I really don't want to expose her to that until she's waaaaay older hehe.

Pfff. You forgot hands everyone else their asses, and her idea of a "bad" game still includes a better score than half the squad.

But yeah. Otherwise that's pretty close.

Oops, almost forgot, my daughter still doesn't have a Purple Heart, either.

Zannon's three year old actually turns off Zan's computer while he is playing swg and says, "You play with me now."

I don't know if he has the video gaming spirit in him yet, but give him some time.

My soon-to-be 3-year-old now comes up to me while I'm going at it in BF2 and asks "Did you die again?"

The shame.
